Hello All - I'm sure this topic & thread has been done a million times before, but this is strictly for academic & research purposes. Please read the question and answer honestly. Comments are welcome, and if you have questions regarding my study, I'd be more than happy to answer them via PM.

Well, it's legal to buy an M rated game when you're 17, as if it was required '18+' then it'd be an AO game and no one sells those...

I live in Sweden where the ESRB are nothing more than recommendations. How could I tell?
I got both Borderlands and Killzone 2 at gamestop when i was 14 without a licence or anything.

The ratings system used to be a mess here in the UK. I think at one point there were 3 different rating systems for games; ESRB PEGI and BBFC so no one really took them too seriously or really understood them. You could just walk into a store back in 1996 until like 2006 and buy whatever game you saw fit.

It's been epically tightened up now though, been IDed more for games than booze.
Thanks, and would you mind if I quoted that last line? It's absolutely perfect!

I definitely bought Conker's Bad Fur Day myself when it first came out. I was well under the appropriate age at the time.

I remember the first M-rated game I bought when I was under-aged...

It was Scarface: The World Is Yours.

For a movie licensed game, I loved that title a lot. It was very epic.

I never believed in that system, though the game may have been rated only for adults, it doesn't mean one under that age cannot play it. I've played so many Mature games before I was even 12! Besides, kids are gonna learn swears and sex without a games help anyways, either from parents, friends, or a porn movie like the one I stumbled upon when I was 4 trying to look for a Pokemon episode.
