So, I'd like to know, how do you feel about UMD's for the Play Station Portable?

Do you find them okay?
Annoying?
Great?

I happen to love UMD's, they look like if a game cartidge and a Game Cube disc made love, this would be their offspring.

While I don't mind them, they are still a rather inferior and 'failed' storage medium.

At the time of the PSPs release they were cheaper than the memory carts like the DS used...but that quickly changed and thus the UMD became another betamax. While they offer a good amount of space, they are fragile and the disks do not have any sort of protection on them (physical kind). Just another attempt of Sony trying to push a new format on the industry, and while it holds a ton of space (1.8gigs), it was a rather fruitless attempt.

Quite frankly I am happy that Sony will be switching to another physical medium with the PSP2, most likely those pro duo cards we use or something close to the DS but with more space.

I take damn good care of my UMD collection, but I certainly wont miss em in the next generation.

EDIT: Although I hope to god that the PSP2 will have some sort of backwards compatibility with PSP1 games. They can keep to UMD drive in for that, or sell a UMD drive add on for all I care. Hell maybe even have a legit way of ripping our PSP1 games to digital form. I just want friggen backward compatibility.

UMDs failed because they were proprietary despite what sony thought, there was NO Home player or Pc drive or any other means of playing them other than a PSP

I like UMDs. In a way, they remind me of the GD-ROM disks that the Dreamcast would use, but you are correct; they do look like the union of a cartridge/mini-disk.

I've got about 16 games in my PSP library, all of them well taken care of, and even once the PSP2 is released, I'm going to keep my old system around until I find out how I can move all my games to the new system. The Flash storage sounds nice, though; eliminating the disk drive and spin-up/spin-down should improve the battery life quite a bit.

I like them because they protect the game quite well even out of the case, while still providing memory so developers can still stuff as much as they want into their games.

Excellent, seeing as it doesnt require much space on memory card (mostly only for saves) and plus, PSN has less than half of all psp games, albiet easier than to replace disks.

Agreed. I've had a PSP for about a year and I still fuck up every time I put a UMD in.

Wow. Seriously? I've never had trouble with them, except when I first got one with the PSP. But other then the first attempt, due to taking the disc out of the cartridge like casing, thinking that was how you put it in... Anyways, nope, never had trouble with them. I can just easily put it in, only taking a few seconds.

It's a failure, but I don't hate them. However, I'm more pissed at Sony moving away from them. "Hey guys, let's make a verion of the Playstation Portable to move away from UMDs, but not update our digital center frequently. Let's also make content a pain in the ass to acquire, especially with our dated wireless! What could go wrong?"

Media compatability is going to be an issue for the new PSP too.

AH WELL.
