Poll: "Uniforms" in public school

I think almost all schools have a uniform.

Shirt
Tie with school colours
School trousers(I don't know their type).
And no hats inside.
Girls can wear skirts, the school trys to keep the length long but no one listens and they eventually give up.

As a passionate individualist, I think the very concept of a dress code is ridiculous, and especially hair.

Sure, school is for learning, not for making fashion statements, but dress codes have nothing to do with learning. I've yet to hear one single good argument FOR dress codes.

It allows you to spot intruders in the school easier and quicker before they cause trouble.

All schools? I only know 3 in this area that have optional school clothes that you can wear if you want to.Mostly shirts,pullovers and hoodies in several colours with the school logo.
Still got my hoodie from back then and i like it very much.
But apart from that there is not a single rule about clothing in our schools here.
So we had the guy in a suit next to the guy with a leatherjacket with nice metal spikes on the shoulders(who might that have been ), who sat in front of the girl in miniscirt and top or the gal in turtleneck and jeans and her friend in baggyclothes.
A diverse mix of diverse characters and luckily it worked for us.
Well Its some kind of "elite" school so its not that there was much reason for enviousness, which is often given as a reason for uniforms.

Live in Britian, you have to wear a uniform not matter how rich your parents are.

-Black dress shoes
-Black/grey socks (knee length for girls)
-Black/Grey Pants(or grey skirt)
-White long/short sleeved collared polo shirt (top button must be done up and shirt tucked in)
-School tie (must be worn at five stripes)
-Black jumper with school logo
-No earrings for Boys AND girls
-Coats or hoodies must not be worn inside, even if the heating is broken and no matter how cold it is
-No hats inside or outside
-No makeup at all.
-No unnatural hair dye (blue green purple bright red)
-Boys: Hair must be no shorter than a number two (but can be as long as possible)
-Girls: No shorter than 15 cm
-All: Hair must not be styled in a certain way (pig tails, braids, dred locks, mohawks)

No warnings are given for a violation, instant detention (1 hour after school)

To add iceing to the cake of hatred:
Teachers are allowed to wear what they want to a degree.

And this is just a normal school, public school is much stricker

i tend to be in favor of dress codes at schools but this is ridiculous, i myself spend one year at a school with a school uniform and they were rather relaxed about the whole thing (only enforced rules were no hoodies over the shirt, no sneakers and the shirt color)

ehh i went to a stupid catholic school till 7th grade, so i do realize they suck, especially for a public school thats gotta sucks, they shouldn't make it that restrictive on what exactly you need to wear, i think having proper jeans pulled up with a belt if they are loose is fine, same goes for kacki's or similar type pants/shorts, and having shirts with symbols logos no bigger than 2 in by 2 in or something, otherwise some of those rules are pretty stupid and dont do anything except frustrate the kids and families who have to buy new clothes for their kids.

Meh, you'll get used to it, and believe me, the rules wont be followed. I'd give it 2 weeks before you guys find out a way to wear it your own way.

Its been over 2 years, they keep adding more and more to the code and are getting stricter and stricter with everything.

The other day one person got send to ISS for being turned in his seat, Another two for talking, and another for giving the teacher her papers back for being out of line. All of this in the first five mintues of school. They've also restricted the time we can use our lockers so half the people carry all their school supplies with them all day.

Quick question,what country are you in? because im in England and my school is even worse =_= . My school makes us wear pants,jumper and tie with their logo on them. White shirts only, no hair dies, we HAVE to have our top buttons done up, we can only have black OR white socks, we cant have piercings or anything. The list could go on...
(worst thing is, they got rid of "non-uniform day" and replaced it with a "jeans day"!!

I'm personally against dresscodes of all sorts - the choice of clothing is an important aspect of first-hand impression and as such of social life in general. Forbidding certain items of clothing not only limits a person's ability to express him- or herself, which only lead to frustration.

Also, it serves no valid purpose. None at all. I really, really, can't see how anyone would benifit from a school dresscode. At all.

No i'm not of the belief that your school/education facility is your god and master. That sums up how i feel about school uniforms.

Why should the school be allowed to dictate what you wear? If a school forces you to wear something they are crushing that persons personal freedom in my eyes. Who cares if people dress sexually, shows gang affiliation or look completely gothic? It's up to them how they want to be seen (and subsequently judged) by others. People are in school to learn, not to have discipline drilled into them. It's a school, not a boot-camp.

yeah but your confusing personal time and school. A school is there to prepare you for the real world. You going into an office looking like a gang member or somebody who's going to hang themselves you would be sent home or fired, its preparing you for that situation (this isnt always true but its close to 80% of jobs have some formal uniform requirement).

Yeah but the thing is the following, people don't operate solely on experience, we can think for ourselves. All people who aren't mentally handicapped will understand that you need to dress in certain ways for certain jobs. A mechanic will need to wear something durable and a lawyer will need something fancy but understated. If they don't understand that they are not fit for the job.

You can't seriously tell me that wearing a school uniform is necessary for you ability to dress for the situation later in life. You don't need experience on how to wear dress code. It's clothes, not rocket science.

Let the youth be youthful, dress codes is just going to piss them off. Thank god Sweden is as laid-back as it is.

Cloths define our style and personality, and God help anyone who doesn't express their individuality by dressing like everyone else (because the teachers won't). This might come as a shock to a lot of people, high school students in particular, but schools already have uniforms, they're just supplied by The Gap or American Eagle Outfitters, or whatever the local equivilents may be.

so for you to feel unique you need to wear specific clothes. instead of actually being unique through your actual personality. if everyone is wearing the same sort of clothes/uniform then you just need to try harder to be unique.

that old saying ''the clothes make the man'' isnt actually true. you are being forced to wear similar clothes. your clothes are not you. your clothes do not affect your personality. if your clothes can discourage you then what ever it is that you are being discouraged from must not be that important.

and i guess you havcent been reading this thread since there have been plenty of good reasons for having a uniform.

I actually don't need clothes to be an individual, I am a complete geek, I wear the same color khaki pants literally every day (different pairs of course, I'm not some smelly idiot)

I just don't like being told I have to wear uncomfortable clothes and look like everyone else for no good reason, it seems like a pointless act. It's more the comfort, and pointlessness rather than the individuality.

I agree with that statement, but as it is, the world is like that. You can't change it and it sucks to realize it, but I hate to see people who let things like being told what to do for no good reason bog them down in life.

It's not like I'm going to start a petition or something stupid, I don't let it "bog me down" either, I just post a couple complaints on the internet if I come across a thread on it.

My school never had uniforms, the dress code consisted of:

1.) Don't wear anything advertising drugs or alcohol
2.) Don't be fucking naked.

That was about it.

And guess what? THE WORLD IS STILL SPINNING.

Also, at my school any jacket is fine , they even let jeans slip every now and then, but shirt and tie is necessary.

At the high school I teach out the kids have to wear uniforms. The high school that I attended however didn't. I can see pros and cons for both and really don't have a strong opinion either way.

Is it possible for you to change schools or are you in your last year or so?

my school doesn't have that strict of a dress code compared to yours (actually compared to yours I could go streaking and no one would bat an eye) but I would wear a uniform if it was moe like the ones they have in anime and manga. Because that would just rock.

I was just saying the issue has been blown way out of proportion, people act like if kids aren't forced to wear certain color clothes a gang war will break out in the cafeteria, and the only defense against everyone in the school dying is a tucked in shirt, it's insane.

I don't really see as a big problem. Over in the UK pretty much all schools, primary and secondary have dress codes or uniforms.

I remember my uniform in secondary school. Black shoes, black/grey trousers, light blue shirt, dark blue jumper with school logo, dark blue tie. P.E kit, shorts and T-shirt with logo. Not much different from my primary school one except it was red and we did not have to wear a tie.

We had similar rules aobut wearing hoodies and coats in school as well, makes sense really you don't need them inside. I see you are from the states though so I guess its just a cultural thing, I know you guys have different rules for Public and Private schools. Over in the UK though State (public) and Private schools both have uniform systems.

I can see the problem in strict dress codes and I would prefer none at all in my school but I can see the advantages. There might not be a gang war but there has been a few times neds from other schools(or who don't even go to school anymore) have entered my school looking to cause trouble and some try cell drugs at the school gate.

Crossing the street can be fatal too, but we don't make everyone crossing the street wear LED flashing vests.

However you are told to look both ways, use the traffic lights etc.

And when you're on your bike you're told to have the reflector lights on the wheels so cars can see you at night. Different safety precautions for different situations.
