i was just wondering if any of the escapists that have been to university would say that uni life is like they show on TV. Sex, drugs, alcohol, essays done the day before deadline etc. etc.

im just wondering because i go off to university in september and want to know how close to real life the stereotypes really are, and to know of any funny stories you have of university.
also as a small side note, does anyone go De Montford Leicester, or is going there in September?

i searched for a thread like this and found nothing, just so i don#t get bemoaned.

sort of, but i'd hardly call it steriotypical. it would be if you were in halls (as i am now). the leaving reports until the night before is a bit of an exageration. i had one in for last thursday, i started it on monday, and finished thursday morning

edit: so it's kinda true, but a bit exagerated.
and do't go expecting to get with the hot chick on your floor, because getting with someone on your floor is like taking a dump in the kitchen

I went to a university for a year, and no, it's not all booze, sex, and procrastination. It CAN be, but it usually isn't. However, I will say that most things you hear about fraternities is accurate, based on my experience. If you're thinking of joining any kind of brotherhood...

...Don't.

Don't know. Just because I'm working on a degree doesn't mean I go to a university.

It depends on how much you participate.

If you aren't in any clubs, or don't have a big friends group, then the parties, sex, drugs and rock and roll aspect is slim to nil.

Also if you don't drink coffee, you miss out on about 50% of all uni student interaction.

Also if you live on campus or not.

No but there are a lot more drunk people than the tv shows. Lots more.

Certain aspects...

Like the majority of college students are overly liberal bastards.

At my college at least...

it really depends on the University itself, and which social group you focus on. If your looking for the wild drunken frat side, you can find that at any University, even ones of prestige like Cambridge, or my own Edinburgh.

Uhm, no, not really.
In my experience university is a lot like school except you're a lot more independent.
You still have to do your work but nobody makes you do it.
If you don't do it, well, you won't get your certificates.
Nobody cares if you get them or not.
And that's it.

I'd agree with this...
9am lectures after 99p Tuesdays are always such fun :)

Depending what course you do, you will find varying degrees of what you said. Usually the more work involved means less frequent drinking and such. But I've had plenty projects done exactly to deadlines, and nights out days before exams...

Well I've done all my assignments one or two days before, I go out drinking twice a week (to the detriment of my bank account) and the sex isn't exactly rampant but it's an improvement. So yea it's pretty close to the stereotype, but I think that's only perpetuated by the existing stereotype.

Yes, great times and this also means many drunken members of the opposite sex. Ahh I love college.

Depends on what you do and who you run with.

My first year, I lived with my parents and didn't have a large circle of close friends at the university - I still mostly hung around with a couple of friends from high school. There wasn't much alcohol, no drugs, and no sex. I always started my assignments early, but that's because I'm a conscientious student, and I want to do well and get scholarships; it's therefore a habit that I continue to cultivate.

My second and third years I moved into on-campus housing and then into an apartment with my friends. There is now a larger-than average amount of drugs, alcohol, and sex in my life/routine.

There certainly are people who go out and get completely shittered several nights per week (my next-door neighbor last Fall), wake-and-bake potheads (my current roommate), and ruthless, heartless sex hounds (both my next-door neighbor last fall and my current roommate). So yeah, television certainly exaggerates it, but that doesn't mean that it's not based on actual extreme examples. It's a hell of a fun life; all you need is to learn moderation.

It's full of pretentious arse holes...

At Uni and there is not a pretentious arse hole in your group? Congratulations... It's you.

The worst kind of students are the ones who think of themselves as a bit whacky or zaney. Nothing done with a traffic cone is original.

You'll meet plenty of new people and have a great time. Just remember to study.
