I've decided to buy a PS3, and I'm a person who loves to meddle with new things I purchase. On a website, there's a detailed procedure on how to upgrade a Ps3's hard drive to a larger one (80gb to about 250gb)

However I did wreck my PS2 when I tried to fix a "disk read error" problem it had. I used instructions from "X-play" to fix it however, which probably wasn't the best idea. So I'm a little cautious about tearing up a PS3. (even though I would love to, and end up successful)

So, Does anyone have any suggestions or preparations I should take before I do this? Should I Risk it at all?

Please... no fanboys, from any console.

Here's the link to the website with the instructions... http://www.instructables.com/id/Upgrade_Your_PS3s_Hard_Drive/

I doubt you are gonna need more then 80gb's for a long time, so I would just leave it. Play it safe.

How many of the things that you have tinkered with have still keep all their functions?

It is not a very invasive process. But you will most likely have enough space for a long time.

Do it. You won't regret it. I got a 40 gig PS3 and recently upgraded the HDD to 320 GiB (Best Buy Employee Pricing OWNS)

Unlike the Ps2, the Ps3 not only allows you to tinker,, but encourages it - the thing actually has the slot you can pull open to replace the Hard Drive clearl marked on the side, and the instructions for doing so are written in the manual. Its really quite simple and easy - as long as you have the right sized screwdrivers and Hard Drive, it should work out great.
Going from what I saw on the instructables website, it seemed to be fairly easy and if the PS3 invites it, I have no problem going ahead and upgrading it. Thanks.
