Because animals are SENTIENT. Animals FEEL PAIN. Christ, people who won't eat anything that casts a frigging shadow aren't trying to be good to the environment; they're SCARED OF SHADOWS. It's OBVIOUS, people.
Although I can't but simply agree with all of your views, may I point you to a study that strongly indicates that there is an african tree that will send out some sort of (still not understood) signal when being eaten (it's leaves that is) to the other trees of the same species nearby, which causes them so release a mild toxin which in turn causes their leaves to taste bitter?

Just something I read a while ago.
Uh...I didn't say that. That was a few posts above mine.
Sorry, must have cut the wrong quote [...] whatever.
Apologies.

I personally think it is unhealthy, humans evolved eating meat, and are supposed to eat meat.
I have a friend who's vegan, and I have no problem with him, until he tries to force his beliefs on me, and this is my main problem with vegans, the whole "holier than thou" attitude towards not killing animals.

And just a quick question. If vegans don't want anything to die or be in pain for their food, can they eat a placenta? Nothing has died, so surely they can eat it?

Just a thought
AHAHAHAHA! I like you. You're twisted like me. Maybe we should offer them one...and videotape the event for posterity.
not twisted, I just think too much for my own good (well maybe a little twisted)
I still didn't get an answer though..
Well, I know there are a few that are on campus here...blasted liberal arts college and the people it attracts...so I'll ask the next one I see and get back to you with that.

I care not to discuss the moral justifications for how eating meat and killing animals is bad. I know they suffer, I don't care. Does that mean I'm going to beat up dogs? No. But does that steak taste mighty tasty? Indeed it does.

It really just boils down to guild lines for things not to do to have a happy and full life.
Sample:

1. Do not wear purity rings
2. Do not become a vegan

I see no logic at all behind strict veganism. Vegetarianism I can understand, as people do it for different (and justifiable) reasons. I, for one, love meat. It doesn't matter if the animal is dirty, because we take the skin off before we get to the good stuff.... well, in most countries they do at least.

Also, I don't have enough time in my day to sit here and munch on veggies and grass to get all the energy I need. If all I did during the day was graze, that would be one thing. I don't, I have a job, and excercise etc. Need my meat!

Vegitarianism i can understand, but i just don't get veganism, it's increadible stupid in my opinion. Who says we can't eat these creatures, they sure as hell spend a lot of their time eating each other

As long as no one tries to stop me from eating my meat; they can eat whatever they want.

I say it isn't healthy because there just are certain things about red meat or meat products in general that vegetables don't have. I don't care if someone was vegan but if I was a doctor I would recommend against that.

I dated a vegan once. I took her to the mall after a few weeks. I got some chicken strips in the food court and noticed she just kept staring at me while I ate them. It was then I found out...

OT: I don't believe in veganism (obviously), and I don't really care if people practice it. So long as they don't try to force it on me...(the *****)

The food chain clearly shows humans at the top. We don't have the natural ability to actually go out and kill an animal (in other words, we don't have the strength of a bear, the awareness of a deer, or the speed of a tiger), but it is made up by our ability to create tools with which to hunt. Being on top of the chain means we get to eat everyone else. Biology 101.

Vegetarians, I don't have a problem with, really. I have a vegetarian friend, and she doesn't mind eating tofu while I'm eating half a cow in front of her.
Nevertheless, vegans can get quite infurating, preaching about how "wrong" it is to kill animals for food, how barbaric it is, etc. Also, once I knew the most clueless vegan. He was eating a potato salad with mayonnaise on it:
"Hey, man, aren't you a vegan?"
"Yeah, so?
"So... you're eating mayonaisse."
"What's with that?"
"¬¬"
"What?"
"EGGS! MOTHERFUCKING EGGS! And you can bet your ass the potato didn't lay them"

I don't care about the well being of animals and I only sort of care about my health. I do recognize the economic, social, environmental impact of eating animals so I try to cut down. I'm still in the process of creating a new diet.

So far, the consensus is people don't really care for vegans who want them to be vegans too.

They also don't want to become vegans and don't care if people are vegans or not.

People have a right to eat whatever they want (excluding other people), but they do not have the right to treat me like pariah or harass me because I do not share in their dietary preferences.

I am a meat eater, nothing better than a chicken curry. However those going on about vegans being unhealthy, just rubbish to be honest.

The proteins and nutrients we require can be attained via vegetables quite easily. In fact we typically eat more protein than we use when having meat. Unless you are working out, muscle building etc. Which due to the muscles basically being torn and repairing with the use of protein(how they get bigger)is the only time we need more protein hence the protein shakes you can buy in gyms and the like. Also the reason why those people who have no idea what they are doing at a gym and keep trying to get the bigger arms are doing themselves no favours constantly lifting on 1 group of muscles is a good way to damage them.

We can live on vegetables perfectly fine. Can also do without milk etc easily. The only time we need more Protein and Calcium normally is as infants. Which is where the vegan thing is a little more iffy. A baby with a vegan diet has to be more controlled on what they can eat to get all the right amounts of everything needed. Much harder since they require larger quantities than adults do with things like protein and calcium as their bodies are developing very quickly.

Those vegans who need supplements, simply have not got a clue. Obviously not researched the diet enough to know what to eat.

From a health point of view a properly controlled vegan / vegetarian diet is actually healthier than a meat diet. Some though have a problem with carb loading. Again down to not knowing what to eat and not researching the diet properly to get it balanced.

My only annoyance is those who try and push their way of life onto others.

I'd be ok with Veganism were it not for the extremist groups that rally under its banner.

(PETA being the main example).

I'm vegetarian, I have a mate who is Vegan, she's not preachy at all (unless you actually bring up the issue yourself, but then the blame's on you), and has managed to survive so far. As for me, once I gave up meat (was just a month initially, as part of a bet) I felt a lot better, less headaches, generally more alert etc.

Anyhow, the idea that there isn't enough nutrition in a vegetarian diet (ie, that we need meat to survive) is bollocks, what people are going on about are the so called "essential amino-acids", which they claim is only present in meat, this is false, the essential amino-acids can be found throughout several sorts of beans, nuts and grains. It is fully possible to live your entire life as a vegetarian, and be a lot more healthy than your average meat-eater, without eating any supplements.

I'm aware of bio-engineered plants. I avoid them too. >.>

I can't understand all of the animosity in this thread. Again, I'm not a die-heard vegan, just a light vegetarian, but, geez, you'd think vegans were insulting ya'll's mothers by the way that people tear them down.
