Now, I'm not completely informed on what is going on here but I think this guy is pretty cool and I don't think he would lie about this.

For those of you who don't want to watch the video (it is about 17 minutes long) the story goes that Viacom, owner of iFilm and Spike.com have been illegally uploading popular Youtube videos to their sites and using their popularity for ad profits. In many cases none of the Youtube video's creators are aware that their video is being used as a source of revenue by Viacom and none are getting a cut of the ad revenue.

So, members of the Escapist. What do you think about Viacom, a big company that has actually been SUING Youtube over copyright issues breaking the same rules? Is this wrong?

EDIT: Bananas=Cash, not literally Bananas. Didn't think I'd have to explain that.

That is copyright infringement, and they should be sued for doing it.

Viacom should be sued. The vidoes may be shared, But im certain it says nowhere in the smallprint that intellectual property is waived...

Big business continue to abuse copyright laws then expect me to abide by them. This is a further continuation of a long standing trend, stealing software, and songs, and other content sometimes even for use in anti-piracy campaigns.

Not only that, but a further point of Viacom being run by dicks is the fact that they've taken down hundreds of thousands of videos on youtube with the claim of copyright violation. Not only is that ironic since they're violating copyrights now, but also half the videos they took down didn't belong to them whatsoever.

Okay I didnt watch the entire thing because that guy got on my nerves very quickly but eh I guess I can see where he is coming from.

I am sure they got out of it with some wording in the fine print somewhere, who knows. Plus I dont know I cant see a lawsuit coming out of this (a succesful one at least).

Viacom, the RIAA, Sallie-Mae, & Disney are on the top of my personal shit-list.

I was actually going to mention JeepersMedia's post, but it seems that's the one you were linking to. Ironic.

Oh look, big bad corporations are breaking the law. AGAIN. What a surprise. Either sue Viacom or better: organize a full-blown internet counterattack.

The notion of suing them for bananas appeals to me (no pun intended, and now I'm facepalming because of it). Just think about the settlement. Viacom is forced to go out and buy a load of bananas for Google, who can then have one HELL of a party with it, and nobody from Viacom gets invited.

Bananas are good.

I think when you put something on youtube you kinda admit that you are not going to make any money from it.

Isn't this what Ebaum's World does with flash videos? So Viacom has become the new Ebaum's?

I'm not sure if I fully understand the issue.
Are the videos he's complaining about being uploaded by "users" at VIACOM's website? If this is truly the case then I don't really a ****. This sort of thing is endemic to video sharing on the web. Whether VIACOM claims to 'filter' the videos is a moot point, as i'm sure they don't have people actually watch every video that gets uploaded.

If, however, the company itself is uploading the videos, it's another issue entirely.

As for the adverts, I'm sure they're attached to any video on the site, so it as well seems to be a moot point.

I believe it is Viacom taking content from Youtube and posting it on their sites without giving credit to those who earned it. I understand that a user simply sharing a video on their site is a different issue, one that can't really be helped but I think we can't let these big corporations get away with this.

I thought you had to have some kind of paperwork that says your face can't be used w/o compensation. And while this isn't new, i fully support the suit for bananas case

When you upload a video to YouTube, there is a 'syndication' button that asks if you want third parties to be able to embed and play the video you uploaded, there's also another button that asks if you want your video to be available on mobile TV. Click 'no' to both of these options and sleep soundly.

Normally i'd just tag this with the line "it's the internet, what did you expect?"..
This is Viacom, who sued to have their music/videos removed from Youtube because they didn't get enough profit. Now they turn around and steal videos and give the creators NO profit?

Karma dictates that Google kick Viacom in the balls.

YouTube partners (whos content is being stolen) do make money off of their videos, so does YouTube they get ad revenue.
