Which game do you think should be game of the year? I personally think Bioshock won this one by far, even though there have been alot of other great games that have come out recently but weren't mentioned like Assassin's Creed and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Metroid Prime 3 wasn't even mentioned, which was a big surprise to me. I've played 3 of the 4 games that are up for the award and I think that Bioshock deserves this the most. Reasons are because
1.) The Orange Box only has such a great rating because it is such a great deal
2.) Halo 3 is overrated and will probabaly only win because of the millions of fanboys
3.) I haven't played Mass Effect but I heard it is very glitchy and has many flaws
BioShock I honestly believe has no flaws(I'm not being a fanboy just I can't find any.) If someone can point out a specific flaw then I'd recognize it but I honestly see none. It has a intelligently deep storyline, superb combat style, amazingly well done graphics and I can keep going. Maybe its just me I don't know but I feel that BioShock is the most deserving.

(PS: sorry if this thread was already made, couldn't find it anywhere)

BioShock has plenty of flaws. The linear nature of the game is a minus for some. The infinite-respawn mechanic can destroy tension or even challenge from the game. The AI isn't terribly bright, and it's often possible to cheese a big-daddy from a place of security. The "kill/harvest" plot device of the little sisters offers no real change in the game beyond a different ending. The list can go on...

Which isn't to say that Bioshock is a bad game. It's an *amazing* game. But nothing is flawless - there's always something that somebody can nitpick on.

Personally, I adore Mass Effect. It's got it's own small pile of minor flaws - but I think the game as an experience is an incredible work of imagination and depth. It's not for anyone, but I would heartily recommend it to anyone who is a fan of science fiction.

And hey, while I'm here - if you haven't played the Orange Box yet, Portal alone is more brilliant than many longer 60$ games. Episode 2 is more Halflife fun, and Team Fortress 2 really is a fantastic multiplayer shooter.

As for the Halo 3 fans in legion - I think that any game that can draw so many *millions* of people has to be respected on that alone, if nothing else. Isn't the defining trait of popular entertainment it's popularity?

I suppose out of all of them I'd vote for Mass Effect. But that's my own purely subjective personal opinion.

i'd say Mass Effect
it has some flaws, but those flaws can be so easily overlooked with its level of awesomeness.

Bioshock flaws: chiggins already said it all for me.

halo 3: no, it was pretty much as bad as halo 2, halo 1 is better then both of them combined.

Orange box is not a game, the games are: portal, team fortress 2, and half life 2 ep2, you cant view the orange box as a single game, because its not, and it would be stupid if it were to be treated as such, its kind of obvious that 3 games would get more votes then a single game.

Well its starts in 8 minutes, I hope that Bioshock will take the award but sadly I'll have to put my money on Halo 3 because of it's legion of fanboys/ and the occasional fangirl.

Whoa! Oh my god. I just bought Mass Effect! Definatly that game my a mile. Sure the graphics aren't supershiny and it blinks sometimes... but I couldn't give a poop if it were all stickmen. The game is so fun to play, fight, talk and make sweet sweet alien love.Ok, I'm off to play it again.

Ciao

Well played good sir. Of course the starving african kid would go for the Orange Box. It's five games in one!

You guys, I'm sorry, but I think Halo is just plain fun. Is that so wrong? I just played Double Team on Live w/ my brother for about 3 hours, and was laughing hysterically for about 90% of the time. And screaming with fury for the other 10%. Isn't that what gaming is all about?

Orange Box is a must have, but as it's 5 games and not one, Id have to eliminate it from this list.

Where's COD4? it comprehensively destroys Halo3, and it was included in a few other awards... lame.

Of the ones listed, I was hoping for Orange Box, but when Bioshock won, I wasn't disappointed. It's a great game and it deserves its win.

Mass Effect hasnt grabbed me yet, and Im 4 hours in... Im just kind of sick of it. :-/

That list is seriously lacking some amazing titles that should easily be considered GOTY material. Also...and I know I'm going to upset a rather large demographic here, but Halo 3 is not GOTY material in my book. There were much better games out there this year in terms of multi-player and while the game may have been fun in campaign mode it was too short and too dull for me.

If I had to pick out of that list however my vote would (and is) going to The Orange Box simply because not only did it pack 5 games in one box...but pack 5 amazing and well developed games in one box. My runner up would be Mass Effect, but honestly the best game to come out this year in my opinion is a tie between COD4 and Mario Galaxy

On that list, I'd have to say Bioshock. It's got its flaws and I haven't played it much since I bought it, but hell, I've got the attention span of a gnat for most fps games and yet Bioshock held my attention all the way through and I really enjoyed playing it. Plus it's original, and I like it when developers try something new rather than rehash the same premise over and over and over! Portal was amazing and all, it really was, but that's the only other game on that list that really stood out for me and it alone can't compete with Bioshock, GlaDOS or not!

Not on that list though? Hmm... Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl was another fun fps game that held my attention. Lots of mods being released for that one too! Then there's The Witcher, very fun rpg and... what else was released this year? Do expansions count, because I also liked Medieval 2: Total War - Kingdoms, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer & Civ 4: Beyond the Sword. Aw hell! It's just been a great year for gaming. I don't think I could pick a favorite, just too many to choose from.

You know peronally I think its sad that all of the ganes in the poll either have bugs up the ass or are just derivative rehashes of games we saw 3 years ago, although Portal takes some of what Prey did an expands on it to its credit. Even Call of Duty 4 which is a good game falls flat on the PS3 what with a nonsensical omition of friend adding while in the game which even Graw 2 managed to do in a way that ended up working ok. I also find it that some of the people who were busy talking about how easy it was to dev on one platform or hard on another end up putting out games with just pathetic amounts of problems.

I have not played it yet (need to send back Mass Effect first.) but I suspect that my own personal game of the year is going to be UT3 just because it is going to do things that really have never been done for a console before. (OMG innovation, something I do not think any other game released this year can actually claim.)

I think that while the games listed in the poll and the others would be worthy of such consideration it shows that this year really, really has sucked for gaming. I know it really has been my most dissappointing year.

How is Unreal Tournament 3 going to do things that haven't been done on a console before? There's absolutely nothing in UT3 that hasn't been done before. Level editor? Timesplitters 2 had that. And the UT3 one the actual editor is PC only, so you can only download mods on the console versions, you won't be able to create them. Even on the PC, UT3 is a competent but unsurprising arena shooter, not much of an advancement over previous Unreal Tournament games barring graphically.

Full mod support has never been done before on any console game. A level editor is a far cry from being able to actually put a total conversion on a console....
