OK, I am a fan of call of duty (and if anyone draws attention to this with cod hate comments instead of the actual topic, they are stupid and shall be ignored) and I am also a fan of Alphanumerical arrangement when it comes to my video game collection. So when I got Modern Warfare 2, I had difficulty deciding whether it should go before or after COD4.

You see, COD4's full title being: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
and MW2's full title being simply: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 I had trouble deciding whether numbers came before letters or not. I decided that they should, so that it would flow chronologically.

But now Black Ops is coming out, and the full title of that is: Call of Duty: Black Ops
So my PS3 shelf is going to go
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

I can't be the only person who thinks that video games should continue adding numbers to their titles instead of just putting subtitles under them.

Also, the film industry isn't too good at this either (e.g Transformers: revenge of the fallen, All the Indiana Jones films, every pokemon film after 4 and pokemon 2000)

So what do you think, should they, or do you like this arrangement raping subtitle nonsense

EDIT: Guys, I don't want you to tell me how to arrange myself, it's already prepared. Just answer the question and discuss ok. And I don't have OCD! so shut up about it!!

COD4 was just them trying something new with the franchise but then realised it could be its own thing all together thus it being Modern Warfare 2 rather than labelled COD 6 which it technically is as it's after World at War (COD 5). Black Ops is considered COD 7 and following COD's will be continue this flow which made me realise, how many fucking COD's are there going to be before it dies?
To me a subtitle still means it's got a number related to it, however how many people call Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4? (or 5 for that matter if you consider Fallout Tactics canon)
I think i'm confusing myself here so im just going to shut up

I think it's not much work to add a number, but I really don't care. I like clarity, but a good subtitle is always nice. I don't like when they ignore everything that's come before them, like wolfenstein or alone in the dark did.

OCD? Haha.

Yeah I supposed it avoids confusion and stuff, but if the games aren't related story-wise, they shouldn't be numbered [so I think Black Ops does it right].

I would rather prefer subtitles than numbers(i.e. Call of Duty : Black Ops instead of Call of Duty ∞). However, you have to be clever with the subtitle, or else it's also shit.

I like the Sam & Max system of "X0Y: Insert Subtitle Here"

For instance, "Sam & Max 104: Abe Lincoln Must Die!" means "Sam & Max, Season 1, Episode 4, titled "Abe Lincoln Must Die"

(Which, by the way, is free on steam, so go get it.)

If you follow the series, you should be pretty familiar in which order the games come.

In my opinion, if you began to number your sequels, please continue, if you didn't, please don't.

I do like a good clean numbered title, but just put them in the order they came out in.

No, I think it's a lot more creative to have games with different titles in a series, not only that, people will still inevitably call games by a numerical title anyways.

For instance, CoD WaW was CoD 5, MW2 was CoD 6, and probably, Black Ops will be known as CoD 7.

Uhm, if it's only the order in which to put the titles on the shelf, why do you make such a fuss? Just order them chronologically and be done with it. I'd understand if you were complaining that the list in your Excel sheet is in disarray if you have it sorted automatically, but you, as a person, aren't required to sort alphanumerically, you know?

OT: Numbering chronologically would be advantageous for those who otherwise would get confused about the proper order, for example because they get to know the series late. But it makes sense where different producers are involved (as in CoD) or different platforms are used (using numbering for small, hand-held spin-offs wouldn't make much sense).

I think they should have the nukmber somewhere on the product. So even if modern warfare 2 is called that, they should have cod6 written on the bottom or something.

Why have so many comments been claiming that I have OCD. I'm not making a fuss about my shelf, I'm using that as an example to build my actual topic on. Also, to clarify, I do like subtitles, but not just a subtitle, I would prefer a subtitle following a number, so:
Blood 2: The Revengening is better than just Blood: The revengening.

Look up Super Flash Brothers or The Decline of Video Games on newgrounds. The first episode makes a joke out of Final Fantasy in the future: Final Fantasy VVVXVVIIIXIXIXXIIIVVVIIVIVIVIVIXXIXIXXVVXVXVXVIIIXVIXVXIVXIIVIXIVXIVIXIVVXI.

Basically, once the number gets above 5 or so, they get embarrassed about how much they've milked the franchise, so they stop putting the number on the end, and just put the subtitle. (For sports games, they switch to putting the year on the end.)

Like world at war? They might as well have just just called it "CoD:World War 2,are you sick of it yet? Usually it seems thy drop numbers after the third one. Probably because that's where most series are considered to "go bad". I still can't think of any movie series with a good fourth. Some don't even number the third. I thought that Hitman had just three games because of how all it's PS2 versions were labeled.

No... at least i dont htink so, because then what happens when you're about three games in (numbered well, there is no number on the first, but ehn 2 and 3), and then you get to the point were someone says prequel? you have to make a whole new title and name, even though people are going to call it ___________ 4 (or wahtever number). Like iwth Halo and halo Reach.

And I'm not saying you should have everything planned out from the get go because thats not really creative fun, but it will just get confusing to somene when you say COD 5 and people think you're talking about MW2 (since CoD five with a step backwards)

Like if i had all the FF games on a shelf it would be 1-13 minus 11 in sequential order.
Well yeah, it also helps that they're numbered.
But if Final Fantasy just used subtitles instead of numbers, that would be difficult to order. that's what I'm trying to say
