So last night I had a dream in which i was playing a really awesome game. A lot of my dreams have me playing videogames that are better than what exists. Does this ever happen to any of you?

For those of you who are interested. It had a fairly basic plot you vs evil giant black dragon, he has army you are building one up. It took place on a rather large island where you were building up an fortress and exploring minecraft style except with the terria depth increase danger progression, and really cool loot system, that I don't remember any specifics of. you could collect monster eggs and raise them to defend various rooms of your fort, and you could gather allies to help you in any large scale conflict. this is the part where it get quite unfair to compare it to existing games because it was full V.R. action rpg combat. I was playing a mixed magic and sword build. The magic system was quite complex six elements with unique spell sets and mechanics, the four I remember were fire, lighting, shadow, and physical. I remember these because where it had gotten to the point that I could decimate normal mobs by the dozens with fire or lighting, and started to think I had it figured out. than a invasion happened that was lead by a master of each element. I ran into fire and lighting were able to completely dispel my spells and cast some really cool stuff, I was barely able to kill them with dodging and sword. Than physical showed up and I could not touch him and had to pull him to a demon I had raised to kill him. then I was spending some time with the menu screens trying to figure out how magic and all the stats worked and woke up before I could figure it out. then I decided to share because that was awesome.

That dream wasn't based on a game you were already playing? You just invented one while you were sleeping? That's kind of cool!

The only times something similar happens to me is when I'm deeply invested in one game, or I play it right before going to sleep. I'll dream that I'm still playing the game (not just games - this happens with jobs and programming for me too). It's always frustrating because the mechanics are inconsistent in my dreams too, so I'll never make progress, and I wake up confused.

Though I did have one a few nights ago, where I was aware that I was playing a game in the dream, but it felt incredibly real at the same time. It was a virtual reality version of System Shock 2, with the exact same hybrids and everything. The mechanics were so good that I had to actually crouch or crawl on the floor to avoid sightlines, and every computer was fully interactive. I remember opening up some file cabinets and noticing that they all contained the exact same folder. Also, there were books that you could pick up and read on tables, but they all contained the exact same images even if they had different titles. My brain is trying to re-use art assets! Anyway, that dream got me pretty excited for the Oculus Rift.

Rarely is it a recognizable title or specific game. I get the dream 'doublethink' thing going sometimes when I realize the unreality of what's happening, but my subconscious mind contextualizes the disconnect as 'maybe I'm playing a videogame' instead of 'maybe I'm dreaming'.

Basically, the kinetic synesthesia is something more prevalent than actual characters or settings.

Just recently, I had a dream based off Far Cry 3. I don't remember much, but I remember I was dressed as one of the Privateers and was hiding in a forest with these bright yellow leaves (all the leaves in FC3 are almost always green) next to a road with another guy, who I'm assuming is a different version of Sam. The next scene, I'm running, probably being hunted. At one point I reached one of those small shacks that are usually found in the game. It was really cool.

There was another one before that, probably based off a mix of Payday: The Heist and Mirror's Edge, or something involving co-op. I remember being with 4 other people dressed in military gear, running across buildings and breaking into stuff. The final moment I remember is everyone simultaneously cheering and pumping their fists into the air after reaching a certain area, and I felt this rush of success as soon as I realized what was going on.

A few years back, I had dreams about Sly Cooper for 3-4 days in a row. One was a hypothetical E3 level of Sly 4 in a rich guy's mansion. Another scene was in this towering prison in a ninja setting in which I was this ninja raccoon (no doubt Rioichi Cooper) and had to escape. The scary part is that there is actually a level in Feudal Japan in Sly 4 that has you doing the EXACT SAME THING. (note: this was waaaaay before Sly 4 actually released, so I had no prior knowledge or anything) How freaky is that? In the same dream as the one in the second paragraph, I was in this showing of an Ancient Greece level that was made from a set, so it was as if I was actually balancing and climbing in real life.

Cool stuff. I hope for more to come.

After playing the Citadel DLC for Mass Effect 3, I had a dream that night that I was Shepard at the party, and I had to leave to do something (Think Garrus came with me... can't really remember). Anyway, I returned to the Party to find, to my dismay, that Kasumi, who turned out to be indoctrinated, had killed everyone. Vega, Liara, Jacob, Traynor, Jack, Grunt, Tali, Joker, EDI, Wrex, everyone. Only Zaeed was for some reason alive, hanging out in the shower not doing anything. Not really sure what was going on there. Anyway, Kasumi then attacked me, and I had to kill her.

Needless to say with Mass Effect's immersive and emotional nature, this dream was a positively devastating nightmare.

I've had various dreams involving certain settings and scenarios from various video games. But I've never had a dream where I was just playing a game normally.

Yes, it used to happen quite often to me. I remember back in the day when I used to play Runescape all the time, I had a dream where my character died out in the wild, and lost all his gear. It felt so real, when I woke up, I actually logged on to see if he still had his stuff!

Something I noticed that happens to me in game dreams...Even if I can only 'see' the screen or, if I'm actually in the game world itself, I can still FEEL myself using a controller. Like feeling my thumb press X or O to jump, it's a really weird sensation.

Does that ever happen to anyone else?

I don't remember all of my dreams but I can say confidently that I've never really dreamed of playing or being in a video game. I don't know why, I play just as much as anyone else around here. I guess I have inhibitions and deep seated issues that take front stage in my dreams.
