What's your opinion of violence in gamng. What do you thinik about the level and realism of it and how should it be changed (if applicable)

I enjoy it as a good stress reliever and don't think it has any negative effects on most peole.

Sorry to be abrupt, but most people will just put "other" and not post anything. Way of the world.

As for me, I'd say it completely depends on the game. Whereas in some games it can add another layer and, if presented maturely, helps to ground it in reality and truth. However simple-minded, gratuitous violence is just childish.

Although, it can be used as a kind of self-parody, or done in a very artistic way (for example, Sin City). It's a complex issue and, as I said, depends on the game in question.

Depends on the game. I can get down with as much blood as they can deliver when I'm playing, say God of War. However, it's just out of place for it to be gushing out of every wound like a fire hose in say, Call of Duty. Sometimes you need a truly violent game to get you pumped up. Ripping people apart with your bare hands just doesn't have an equal.

Gaming equivalent: MadWorld.

Can't add much to that, it all depends on the game. When you suddenly see Goomba's explode in GoW-ish (God of War or Gears of War, doesn't matter in this case) gore when Mario stomps them, then it's simply out of place and doesn't belong there. But in GoW itself it fits, and it's fine.

I for one think that the level of violence in video games is generally too high. I have always found rediculous amounts of violence presented in a serious way to be in exceedingly bad taste, like in Fallout 3. To me, it's really a flaw of presentation when you can shoot a guy in the head and either decapitate him or have his head explode in a shower of blood and fly off in all different directions. This is particularly jarring when it happens with a laser weapon. Come on! It's light, it has no mass! Now when done correctly, gratuitous violence is acceptable and even preferrable, like in No More Heroes. When you cut some guy open with your beam katana, blood (and coins, for some reason) come gushing out in a screen-obscuring fountain. However, in this case the violence is not presented seriously, and as such it becomes a positive aesthetic. It just seems to me that too many games are using unspeakable violence as their main selling point, and they apply it liberally to cover up the shortcomings of their story and characters.

There needs to be various amounts of blood gore and violence in games. Some with very little, some with a lot.

There should be an option in the poll along the lines of "Don't really care." Violence in games doesn't bother me, but it's not something I tend to really notice in the first place. Violence could be toned down or scaled all the way up and it wouldn't affect my enjoyment of a game at all.

The more violence the better. Let's face it, I'm not playing games for the realism now, am I?

Really depends on the game, some games needs tons of blood and severed limbs to feel right, and other games would just seem stupid if they had (more) violence and blood.
Sims 4! now with guillutines and upgrades blood splatter graphics.

I hate it when the media tells me that playing Gears of War 2 for a few straight hours makes me desensitized to violence... it makes me SO MAD!!! RARRRRRRGHGHGHH SOOOOO ANGRRRYYYY IT MAKES ME THIRST FOR BLOOD AND DEATH AND CARNAGE. I WANT TO RIP OUT THEIR BEATING HEART AND DRENCH MYSELF IN THEIR BLOOD THEN TEAR OPEN THEIR INTESTINES AND EAT THEIR ORGANS AND CRUSH THEIR BONES. RARHAHAHH BLOOD GORE KILL.
Obvious joke is obvious, my apologies.

Seriously I think violence in games will always sell because we are aware that it's pretend violence like no one ACTUALLY died when I just jammed the chainsaw up his dick. I mean I've seen guys who laugh at the gory happenings of God of War, Ninja Gaiden 2, Gears of War, Dead Space but then when they watch an actual violent brutal movie lik say- Gomorrah or Pan's Labrynth they retreat in disgust because of how gruesome it is.
We are always aware that violence in games is fake and I don't see much issue.

However as it stands it can be used to point out that while we as an entertainment industry have nothing against watching people get their arms and legs torn of and them dying in agony... we still will not allow sex or nudity without serious scrutiny. Funny world. Why it's even a MadWorld*.

*awful pun

Violent video games are causing the destruction of the youth of the world and must be put a stop too. Video games can only be compared to underage sex, and drugs. Every child is at risk of committing horrible acts, from playing these games. Oh god the horror!!!!!

ok i love my bloody and gorey games as much as the next guy :p but if a game has too much gore for what its trying to be then it becomes lame. this said it also goes the other direction, can you imagine playing prototype with no blood?

The level of violence that's appropriate for a game depends on the game. The over-the-top cartoonish mowing down of innocent bystanders whether it be by assault rifle or reckless driving perfectly suits games like GTAIV and Saints Row 2.
The graphic and intense firefights suit games like Call of Duty 4.
I thought the violence in Condemned 2 was a bit too much in terms of being over the top AND particularly graphic, but again that suited the kind of game we were playing so you can't just point to it and say "that game is too violent".

There are games that are graphically violent for no good reason, but often it's not the violence in and of itself. It's how the violence is handled, how the game presents its attitude to violence. There are games (and movies, and literature) that glorify violence for the sake of violence, and that's when we need to draw the line.
I mean I can play a game like CoD4 and walk away having just killed a bunch of people and that game if anything tells us how freaking awful war is and how we're all a pack of shits for participating. The game reminds you that in war people die and that sucks.
You don't get that from say, Fallout 3, where the gruesome dismemberments and exploding brains are given to you in close-up slow motion, but that's where the game takes refuge in audacity, and makes sure the majority of things we fight only barely resemble humans.

I can't think of any games offhand that were needlessly violent while also being realistically and graphically violent at the same time. I'm sure there's a whole bunch.

As my friend pointed out, an industrial cutting laser could decapitate someone. Don't ruin people's fun, it's called 'being a fag'. What's not fun about decapitating people from miles away?

A bit less would be nice sometimes, more diplomacy or solving an issue with your wits rather than massive quantities of firepower. Even RPGs heavily favour violent problem solving rather than diplomacy or outsmarting.

I want the violence in games to decrease, so game developers will have to come up with new ways to make games interesting. "There are enemies, and you have to defeat them using violence." That's a description of way too many games. Imagine if every novel was about a one-legged sea captain chasing a white whale, or if all movies were about ships sinking. It'd be pretty ridiculous, right? But tons of games being about a hero defeating truckloads of enemies on his own? Isn't that just as ridiculous?
