Hypothetical: The Matrix (the movie) is real and you have a choice to be hooked up to the device to experience any setting (including fantasy/sci-fi) of your choosing. Once you enter the world you will still be aware of the fact it's virtual (because you remember the real world) but you will still be bound by the laws set in that world. Also, once you enter you can not leave. You body will be preserved in a comatose state until you die of old age.

This would basically mean you can escape reality and live in your own fantasy world. But would you choose such a virtual world over the real world?

Not while I'm young. You could pop in your own world already... obviously a lot more restrictive, and not as exciting. Unless you have some crazy imagination of course. Or can do some freaky lucid stuff in your sleep.
Even if you were hooked up though, I can't imagine the thrill of omnipotence would last THAT long. Flying, fighting Godzilla, surfing on cars, painting my face on the moon (someday...) etc. would become more and more tiresome... after a few years, what is there left to do that you haven't already become bored of?
And even if I simulated the most convincing "Real world" object and lived there, I wouldn't be able to block out the fact that this isn't real and I'm alone. Maybe some people could, but I just don't have the resolve. I'm hardly a social animal but I find it hard to deal with lonliness sometimes. To live like that for the rest of my life...? I just couldn't.

But it'd be cool for when you're old and wrinkly, or about to die soon enough anyway. I can imagine that type of thing would be the greatest wish for someone like that... must be better than just waiting for death, right?

In short: Maybe later, I guess?

My real life is fine as it is, so I would have a virtual world exactly like it, except with 2 differences

1) Cthulu destroyed washingiton D.C. and replaced government positions with mentaly competent people, then brought all of the civilians who died back to life

2) No intolerence, ever

Although this utopia would get boring, and think of this, everytime you look you're boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife in the eyes, you would know He/she isn't real. so yah, that part would suck like hell. That, or a virtual reality world like the above one, where I can do whatever the fuck I want, and in it there is an infinant supply of red pills, so yes, I can leave
