Because there's no real discussion, just the same, simple predictable answers of "Person A", "Person B", "Both" or "Chuck Norris"
They also spawn the dreaded wars of flame.

I don't have a problem with them PERSONALLY, considering I've never been a part of one, but they are breeding grounds for flame wars.
You have been to MM haven't you? Those are the mothers of all Versus threads and there are always massive flame wars. Even if those threads aren't set out to cause flame wars they do and sometimes people get dragged into flame wars slowly in them or just hope in outright.
I reckon versus threads would be alright as long as certain rules were followed, for example, rule number one:
Answers must be restricted to either of the named combatants,
and number two:
A reason must be given with each answer - a well thought-out and explained one. No personal preference answers.

Versus threads have almost no discussion value. They don't cause anyone to really be enlightened by anything. People will constantly disagree with each other based entirely on personal preference. Flame wars are common.
You may as well just have two guys sit in your room screaming "HORDE!" and "ALLIANCE!" at each other. It has about the same value of a versus thread.

I was looking for actual feedback and reasons to submit my own, in a constructive manner. Instead, I saw enough BR vs. DMR [vs. AR] threads to last me five years. All of which were flame wars. The shit hits the fan really, really quickly.)

It promotes argument than discussions. Also depending on the vs the topics can make people really testy and mad causing trouble and often if where people usually get reported for going to far or saying something they shouldn't have. Now should we have Vs threads? Not really, but at the heart of it if someone really intelligent and unbaised approached something with an even degree of like and dislike for the products in question then you can get a real answer for which is really better than the other.
Of course one has yes to ask the real question when approached with two things being pitted against each other. Why do you care? What does one really get from making a vs thread? Does it matter what anyone says? Is it worth the trouble it may cause to bring it up? What are you going to do with the information you have sought? Are you willing to get exactly what you don't want to hear? Why do people vs anything even though variables are so detailed that you would need a super calculator and a bunch of professionals round the clock to add up the real data to show in as many possible instances whether or not one is better or the other. And lets not forget you need to give it cool name like deadliest fighters and have actors act out the results for entertainment purposes.
