I'm faced with a dilemma here. At some point this weekend, I'm going to be ordering a custom laptop from PC Specialist which is going a mid-to-high gaming setup. Now, I'm a Vista hater, XP will always be better; but I'm very interested in Windows 7, but that is going to be ridiculously expensive even for pre-ordering off of Amazon. Now, I have 2 choices on this site:

*I can get Windows XP and have it made in about a week for £845, then wait a long time for Win7 to get cheaper, or get it in less than a week for £869, then still pay quite a bit for Windows 7

*I wait for about 2 weeks for the laptop, put up with Vista until Windows 7 is released, then get Windows 7 for free with the included voucher (will be Professional and 64-bit) for £860; but it requires using Vista for months, and my longest time using Vista so far before going mad is just over 2 weeks.

Poll is included.

Go with the second option. Vista isn't that bad most of the time: and with a new laptop you'll probably be able to handle it.

Trust me, even with all the good news I'm hearing about 7, I'm still gonna wait until the first service pack update is released to purchase it. You want to make sure they get all the nastier bugs out of the way before you purchase an OS.

yeah, but I'm not wanting to spend too much out of the £3000 I'd saved up since I was 7, since it'll be used in the future.

Vista isn't very good, but you can survive. First option is not that bad either, since Win7 is going to be a buggy piece of crap at first.

EDIT: I actually posted this without reading anything about Win7 and I've heard people say it's pretty good. So sorry about (possible) mistake in the post.

I always wait about a year before getting a new windows, then i'll know if it's bad, and if it's good it'll give microsoft time to fix any major bugs and security risks.

This time is different though, how can you move from XP when... there's nothing wrong with it, my mums got a laptop with Vista on it and it's horrid, if they made any improvements from XP to Vista... i haven't seen them yet, i don't know what 7 could possibly offer over XP.

Go with Vista, then when ever you're ready for Windows 7 you can transfer all your files easier with the 'Easy Transerfer' tool than if you'd gone for XP

As much as I hate Vista, the smart money is with the second option. Good luck my friend.

I dislike vista a great deal but it sounds like it'd be smarter to just get it and put up with it for a while. Frankly it isn't /that/ bad.

I am fed up with WinXP. Although my computer was designed to run Windows XP, the activation crap really got into me. So I tried both Vista and Win7. Vista is a big resource pig, since I have a computer that is now considered at the low-end. But upon trying Win7 RC, it was quite smoother than that of Vista. Drivers are also easier to install, although you have to find workarounds for most of it. I suggest you buy Windows 7 if you are sick with the telephone activation. Else, stick to WinXP. :D

It is just so close for Windows 7 to come out that it would honestly be better if you could get the OS for free with your new custom built laptop than getting Vista. I got Vista for me and my brother about over a year now and it works great, but I always like to future proof. Future proof to me means building a computer that I will commit for about half a decade with little need to upgrade.

Since you are talking about a laptop then you want to future proof because laptops although serve users for a very long time also have a high churn. Wait for Windows 7 and see how the pricing options are.

Just wait for Windows 7 outright.
I would but I've been using a laptop from the early-ish XP days for years, and I'm desperate to upgrade as good as I can, as cheap as a I can, and as soon as f**king possible. As much as I love my laptop (it was my late-Auntie's), I can't cope with 1.6GHz, 768MB RAM and a 30GB HDD.

Roll with Vista because the OS is far best at taking advantage of your mid/high gaming system.. then wait for Windows 7 :)

Use Vista temporarily, I'm using it now. It's not compltely terrible, it's just a *****...an annoying *****. It's still worth using for a couple months if you'll get the free Win7 upgrade.

option 2, then download the windows7 RC and use that until win7 is released properly.

Win7 is everything Vista should have been.

I've been using the release candidate as my only OS on both my main gaming PC and my notebook for months and haven't had any problems :)

I'm using Win7 right now, and it is a vast improvement over Vista. I'd say get vista and deal with it until 7 comes out. The only thing that bugs me about 7 is it's current compatibility issues with older games.

Needs a "Use Windows 7 RC then get Windows 7" option :p I'm really liking the Release Candidate, got my full copy pre-ordered due to loads of places having reductions on it.

Consider Windows 7 as your reward for putting up with Vista for so long.

XP compatibility mode is included with Professional version, thus problem solved really.
