So I'm really liking the look of diablo 3 and I perrty sure that I'm gonna get it when it comes out. The thing is that I don't have much experiance playing that type of game.

I know that the is another game by the same people that is like Diablo called torchlight and thought that this maybe a good way for me to get into this genre in time before Diablo 3 and to maybe get me used to how to play and to see if I even like this genre.

So what I'm asking is:

1. Is torchlight any good? (the reviews I've seen have been mixed)

2. Is it a good way to "train" for diablo 3?

anymore helpful info would be great as well

Torchlight was fair.
Its litterally like they took diablo, and revamped it with WoW like graphics. ((sorry, but thats the easyest way to describe the look.))

Everything from the sounds, to the hotkeys and mind boggling clicking noice is exactly the same. I had a good solid 10 hours of play time before i accedentally got my computer wiped. Didnt bother installing it, but it definitly worth the 20 bucks.

Also, you can get the demo on steam if you still not sure.

Happy looting.

If you didn't reinstall because you think you have to start over steam cloud saved the save file so when you reinstall, your character will be there

edit: OT

Ehh The game was fun while it lasted but it got boring eventually. I think you should get it though its good for at least 10-15 hours.

Torchlight will definitely help you get used to the game style, as would Titan Quest as well. But I have to ask, why not pick up Diablo 2 and play that? Must be pretty cheap by now and it's the closest you'll get. It also has a certain something that none of the others (Torchlight, Sacred, Divine Divinity, Titan Quest) have been able to copy. Hard to explain what that is beyond saying it's a certain je ne sais quoi.

Didnt get it on steam. Got it at game stop. Didnt even use steam at the time. ((perfures the feel of a disk))

I would but (your gonna hate me for this)I find it difficult to play older games because of the graphics. I'm not saying it's not a good game it's just I find it difficult to really get sucked into a game where the graphics aren't up to a certain standerd e.g. something like MoH rising sun

You should do what i do.
Play nothing but the N64 or PS2 for a couple of weeks to a month.
After that you will never complain about graphics again.
But i can see where your coming from. Theyer just so grainy its hard to focus.

play diablo 2: LoD. the graphics are dated but not what i would consider bad. most importantly, playing that on battlenet is the most fun i ever had with an action rpg. seriously, that game must have eaten 4 or 5 years of my life (and im sure we'll be waiting at least that long, for diablo 3)

I don't find D2's graphics to really be that bad. The sprites are small enough the lack of detail doesn't really matter. It still works well for the style its in since, only games that don't stay within their limits age bad. Compare something like Donkey Kong Country on SNES to Goldeneye on N64.

But that's basically what I've been doing to hold out for D3, just started playing D2 again. Level 78 light sorc so far. :D

Torchlight is a lot of fun, I definitely recommend it :)

The sort of game it is is very simple, though. It's pretty much distilled action for reward. CLICK ON GUY! GET EXP, YAY! GET LOOT, YAY! repeat. Forever.

je ne sais quoi.
fun fact: je ne sais quoi is french for "I don't know".

It's quite good, but I don't really play it anymore and I agree with other people when they say it'll get you about 10-15 hours, that's about what it got me.

Fun fact: je ne sais pas is french for "I don't know", je ne sais quoi is frensh for "I don't know what" - hence the english saying, "...it has a certain, I don't know what." (I don't know what is interchangeable with je ne sais quoi. Basically talking about indefinable qualities that make something)

OT - Torchlight is a bunch of fun, but as for training for Diablo...they're both games just playing something you find fun...go workout/exercise/study to train for something 8)

Since Diablo 2 has come out I've bought and rebought it at least 5 times. I couldn't say why exactly but I ALWAYS either lose my disks or they end up scratched beyond repair. Torchlight being a digital download has removed my very real need to play diablo 2 every year or two. I bought it for 10 bucks, but I hesitate to guess how much it will end up saving me.

It's a great game. I dare say it's even better than Diablo 2 all around.

To better answer your question, yes. Torchlight basically IS Diablo 2 in all but story and setting. Right down to the music.

Hum... you do know you can register your CD keys on Battle.net and become able to download Diablo 2 at will, right? (same is true for any Blizz game released after, and including, Starcraft).

As for torchlight, it's immense fun though a fair bit shallower than diablo, but with a far superior interface to those (mostly because it's more recent). If you have no experience with this kind of games, I would consider it a very good starting point.

I've never played Diablo, but I do find Torchlight a polished game. Whether it's fun or not depends on if you like the sort of thing it is.
I find it fun, generally in small doses, though I did play for a big chunk of a day once.

I find it a good game to drop in and out of.

Torchlight is dull and repetative.

Somewhat better TPL altnatives are Sacred Gold and Titan Quest. Both are cheap decent diablo clones and neither will make you any good at D3.

Torchlight was a very boring game for me, I wouldn't waste the money honestly. I would rank Torchlight as "Diet Diablo for retards".
