TLDR: Was Halo 2 a Disappointment for you?

When I speak to people about the Halo series, one thing I often hear is how Halo 2 is the weakest of the games. Now, I'm not one to argue one opinion over another, but I'll just throw my two cents in.

I quite honestly found Halo 2 to have the best singleplayer of the series by a long shot. Yes, that is including the admittedly shoddy ending. To me, it really felt like an exercise in world building, and it pulled it off phenomenally well. The secondary focus on the Covenant's culture as seen through the eyes of the Arbiter helped characterize the foe beyond a collective hell bent on destroying humans. I felt that the political ramifications of the Brutes rising to power, and the subsequent coup were really well played.

The levels themselves all stand out in my mind as fantastic. The first Halo's level design fell apart after the Library, where the whole game began playing in reverse, resulting in the entire second half feeling like an excessively long backtracking venture. Halo 2's levels all stand out in my mind. The highway chase in New Mombassa, the bridge attack on the Scarab. DELTA FREAKING HALO. They even managed to make the Flood levels exciting, such as High Charity or Quarantine.

They were varied, they were lush, and I loved all of them.

Weaponry was given a nice overhaul, the implementation of dual wielding and all the combinations that followed gave a new layer to the gameplay. The AI was still strong, and the inclusion of Jackal Snipers, Brutes, and Drones helped liven up the gameplay even more.

As for the music, I'd go so far as to say it is the best in the series after ODST. It's much more sombre than even Halo Reach or Halo Wars, while still retaining some epic guitar solos, like the Mjolnir Remix.

What I'd like to point out is that I find all of the Halo games fantastic. All of them are very close together in my book, but Halo 2 has enough spark and spirit to be put on top of the list.

I dunno why, I just thought Halo 2 was the least memorable, although after playing Halo 3 I might revise that a little, In my opinion the first Halo had by far the best campaign, everything about it was just right, even the flood sections, I actually enjoyed the library believe it or not.
The flood sections in 2 and 3 however just pissed me right the fuck off

Each of the first three games had its own scrappy "Library" level. Halo 1 had The Library, obviously, Halo 2 had Sacred Icon, and Halo 3 had Cortana. Of these, I felt that Halo 2 handled it the best, because immediately after Sacred Icon, we got Quarantine, which was balls out fun.

The singleplayer was really thrown together. Not only was is awkwardly constructed in terms of story, but the set pieces often just involved entering a room, clearing it out so the door would magically open, and repeating. I also thought the plot was pretty convoluted and forgettable.

Halo 2 isn't a bad game, but it's definitely the worst Halo game I've played. Even Bungie has said the game was rushed and not representative of their vision for it.

Can you give me a link to that? I'd like to read it. Halo 2 is still my favorite, but it would be interesting to hear what Bungie has to say on their own product.

Halo 2 is in my opinion the greatest multiplayer shooter of all-time. It was one of the most skill-based console shooters out there because of the glitches. They ceased being "glitches" and became a showcase of personal skill and dexterity. It was just a magical game.

halo 2 was by far my favorite, i will agree the campaign was by far my favorite and i can't tell you how many co op campaign runs i made with a friend in it.

in my enjoyment of the games (keyword: ENJOYMENT) it goes:

halo 2 = halo reach > halo 3 > halo 1 > halo odst > halo wars

and yes i played them all a shit ton in every aspect of the game(s).

i think the "intro" level was by far my favorite intro out of every fps i have ever played.

I thought it was disappointing.

After the first game, which I personally found to be the best one, the 2nd just wasn't as strong as the first one.

The campaign in particular just wasn't as fun. It's been so long since I touched this game that I barely even remember why. Sure it was nice seeing covenant culture, but the actual gameplay within the campaign felt weak. Perhaps it was the levels. Perhaps it was the new dual-wielding which fucked up the balance of all the weapons. All I know is that I did not have fun playing through the campaign. Which was one of the biggest reasons I wanted this game, since I loved the first campaign so much in coop.

The multiplayer was also disappointing. In the time I spent anticipating Halo 2's release, I had played some multiplayer games which were way better than what Halo 2 ultimately ended up offering. It was fun for a little bit, but got quickly boring and felt rather "dead-end" to me. So I quickly ended up going back to multiplayer games which I enjoyed much more at the time: Counter Strike. Splinter Cell. Etc. The only reason I really played Halo 2 was because every single person with an xbox had the game, and that meant all my friends too.

Halo 2 was pretty much when I got jaded with the series and lost interest with it. Especially after seeing the rave reviews to a game which I personally felt was shit.

In my opinion: Halo 2 is the worst Halo game in the series. No I never touched Halo Wars.

I've always felt somewhat mixed about Halo 2's campaign. I like how its aesthetics and cinematics and writing and stuff all work together, but the gameplay always seems to wear thin after I play it for a bit; it's too easy on the lower difficulties, and it's got too much fake difficulty on the upper ones. And it just doesn't always flow very well, and in the ways it needs to. And some of the unscripted dialogue is just obnoxious.

Not that I hate it by any means. I used to think I did, but I think back then I was using the caveat "compared with Halo 1"* without really realizing it; I spent years playing it extremely often for a game that I supposedly disliked. And a certain part of me, probably heavily influenced by High Impact Halo, really loves it.

I see it as a dissapointment, but my expectations were quite high.

*And Halo 1 has always clicked with me extremely well.

For me personally I thought it was very good, not the best of the lot but still good. If there was one thing about it that I didn't like was that I didn't have a Assault Rifle close by. Weak thing to pick out, yes, but the only one I couldn't think of.

For campaign, I think it goes Combat Evolved>2>ODST>3>Wars>Reach, the only bad one being Reach.
For multiplayer, it would probably be 2>Combat Evolved>3>Wars>Reach, again the only bad being Reach. I've actually been preparing a thread for Halo 4 speculation and wishes, and most of it bases off of where Reach went wrong.

I'm one of those people who thinks Halo 2 is the weakest of the three main games. Campaign just felt too short I guess. Of course, I believe it's standard shooter campaign length now, but after playing Halo for the first time and loving the campaign length, I felt cheated. It just doesn't stick in my mind as well as Halo and Halo 3. I can recall those levels and what happens in them perfectly on command. Halo 2's I have to think for a bit before recalling stuff. It just didn't feel as epic as the others I guess. Still fun to play though. Hope they re-release it on the 360 some time. It'd be nice to have the entire Halo saga on one system...assuming Halo 6 isn't a launch title for whatever the next Microsoft platform is. Don't do it Microsoft. It will make me mad.

That was a problem a lot of people had, myself included. After having that solid machine gun in the first game, being forced to walk around with a SMG that Master Chief had to hold like it was a baby just felt wrong. Glad they brought it back in Halo 3.

It felt short because they had to scrap a huge portion of the game due to money and time.

Halo 2 was my first Halo game, so of course I would think it was great. After years of being confined to the PS2's graphics and stale storytelling, The game was so much larger and had a bigger impact on me.

Halo Wars > Halo 2 > Halo 1 = Halo 3 = ODST = Reach.
