I was playing Halo3 the other day and ran into, what I consider to be assholes. This is not that unusual for Halo, but I am sure that we all can find people who like to be dicks in whatever game we chose to play, not just halo. That said, I am not interested in hearing about the aspects of people online, or Halo 3, but rather the situation I will describe.

I was playing territories. The teams consisted mostly of people who were friends. The teams were 5 man teams, and a total of eight people were friends. Four on one side, four on the other. Which left me and one other player ( on the opposing team) as odd man out. There were five territories to capture.

The group of friends decided to tie the game, by having each team capture only two territories, and leaving the fifth territory open until the game ended. This seemed stupid to me. It made the game have no point or objective. The game started, and they went about their plan, to large success. Finally, I was fed up with being stuck in a thirteen minute long game that was pointless. I had tried to capture the remaining territory on my own, but with eight players ( including members of my own team) shooting at me, I just couldn't pull it off. When the second round started, I decided that I would betray my team members, so that they wouldn't be able to capture our second territory. Which would make the game have a winner, the other team, who had already captured their two territories. Making the end score of the game 2 to 1. When I started betraying them, I asked them why they were playing the game this way. They refused to answer me. Eventually, I betrayed one of my teammates, and they booted me from the game. They only had thirty seconds left to capture their second territory, so I hope that the game did not end in a tie.

I did not want to quit the game, as I find quiting to cowardly.

So, was I wrong, or should I have done something else? What would you have done

Griefing can be fun so I agree with your decision.

But quitting isn't cowardly, its just a game. No one likes rage quitters but no ones got the right to make people play a game they aren't enjoying.

They were being morons, I'd have done the same thing.

Question: Was this matchmaking or custom?

If it was custom then quitting is no issue because someone else could always join mid-game, matchmaking you did the right thing.

they can play however they want, for whatever reason they want, but not informing you of why is just pathetic. they deserved the grief

i hate these types of gmaes where some people decide to play the game "their" way and normally really boring. Also the instantly kick you or have a go at you when you start playing the game normally but personally i wouldnt of griefed them and quit to find a proper game.

It was a matchmaking game.

Forcing them to kill you, so you can boot them is the better option.
I tried to do that, but they were all working together, so my teammates would melee me( dropping my shields) and then an opposing team member would headshot me for the kill. I couldn't get them to outright betray me, to the point where I could boot them.

But in that situation you were not quitting out of cowardice but so you could play a proper game. I don't fell any particular sympathy for you, there's a lot of games out there. If 8 guys want to have a game session then all they should have done is make it private. Doesn't seem like a big deal.

I've never played halo online, but I assume there are other games with other people available. I'd have just left.

It's like arguing on the internet, pointless, stupid and only usually leading to frustration if you get dragged in. How fitting then that there's this thread. :)

To each there own. I know when my friends and I play grift-ball on matchmaking we'll give to to our one friend who keeps it forever. Only because it makes him happy. You didn't do anything wrong it's just something they wanted to do.

In situations like that, when eight people are trying to kill you, it kind of becomes it's own game in a way. If anything, you were probably having a damn-sight more fun than playing for nothing. Play the game how you want; if people dislike it they have the option to boot you, so if they kept you around that long they must have enjoyed stopping you, to some degree.
