So, SEARCH BAR APPROVED

Anyway, did any specific game turn you onto other music.

For example, after seeing Slash in Guitar Hero 3 and completely idolizing him (I was 10), I checked his book. I rewda it and being the driveling fanboy I was (shudder) I checked out some of the music he claimed got him into rock. The first was Aerosmith and things took off from there and now I'm the multi-genre-liking classic rock guy I am today.

So, did any particular game turn you onto an artist or even a whole genre?

No. All the music that I listen to, I listened to way before GH/RB.

Besides, my music isn't hardly on those games.

WTB Rock Band: Coheed and Cambria/Four Year Strong.

And yeah, back in my day, we had walkmans, tape players, and when iPods came out, they were like 1,000 dollars.

No, because the only music game I play is Audiosurf, and I use my music while playing.

I played Donkey Konga. I only liked Tubthumping and the turkish march. The rest of the songs were shocking, maybe except 99 red balloons and ABC melody.

Yeah, Guitar Hero pretty much got me into rock, punk rock, metal, pretty much anything with a guitar.

And what the fuck does the title have to do with the thread?

Once I borrowed Guitar Hero from a friend, and due to an unfortunate incident involving the Fisher Price Guitar, my laptop, and a glass of Coke, I have now sworn off the series. Not the best reason, but easier on my wallet.
Most of the new bands that I run into I find through friends, LastFM, or local events. How that resulted in fandom of Primus... hellifino.

No although one of the rock bands brought me back to "Rock you like a hurricane" a song I loved when I was younger and had apparently forgotten about.

Games haven't turned me to any particular genre of music, I've always liked my music...

I played a lil' PSP game back in '06 called "Infected".
After that, I fell instantly in love with metal.

it means something along the lines of did the music game experience do anything for you, then I focus it on music discovery.

If you're being serious I'm gonna punch you. There's maybe one "brutal" song the whole game and its Cradle of Filth.

Good game, but not truly metal, closer to hard rock in my opinion.

It doesn't have to be extreme metal to be metal.
I agree it gets more brutal, but a metalhead can just listen to Sabbath and Priest.
Please don't try to be an elitist.

I'll say it once. And stop, to not bring moderator wrath on this thread.

I am NOT an elitist if I draw the metal/hard rock line somewhere differently than you.
Yes, I CAN sit and listen to them, doesn't mean that they are metal. I also listen to Train occasionally when I'm in a happy mood, doesn't mean I think they're metal. So drop it, your slanderous, wanton, unfounded claim isn't going to win you points with anyone. End of this discussion.

The hard rock/metal line is getting distorted by these games, I wanted ot make a point that a LOT of songs aren't true metal, but hard rock.

the song that plays during the credits in Mass Effect made me appreciate the alternative/indie genre (or whatever you would call it) so much more.

but really everything in that game was gold.

Edit: Well ok after deciphering the OP message my answer doesnt really fit the question. But oh well, I liked rock way before Guitar Hero came out.

I get a lot of my music from games, and not just Guitar Hero and the like. Racing games like Burnout and NFS, and sports games usually provide me with a good chunk of songs to add to my iPod. I'd say well over a third of my songs came from video games.
