I was looking at some stuff for Borderlands today with it's weapon generation system, and I was wondering about whether weapons would have level requirements, then I thought about weapon requirements in general. Is it a good idea to have weapon skill / level requirements?

On one hand it discourages cheating as your buddy can't give you a massively awesome sword if you're only a level one.... on the other hand, you could get a situation like too human where the weapons you found were so awesome but by the time you leveled up enough to use them, they were just average compared to everything else you were finding.

Thoughts?

It really depends on the game, but it's really annoying to save a weapon only to find that it's utterly useless when you're actually able to use it.
I prefer when you either improve the individual weapons or your skill with guns, like in Resident Evil 4 + 5 or Fallout 3, repectively.

But then again, Resident Evil had the problem that the gun that you've poured money into for the the first part of the game is soon succeded by another gun that is superior in every way and Fallout 3 made you invincible really quick.
This sure is a slippery slope, me thinks.

I really think it depends on the game there used in. I like working for the good weapons in games, gives me more sense of achievement.
When you play a game where you can get the best weapon within ten minutes game time, I think it kind of defeats the object.

I for one am kind of against weapon level requirements, preferring a skill basis over not being able to use a weapon at all... maybe a scaling system where the weapon takes stat hits until you're proficient with it or something.

There are definitely several takes on the subject though.

Like this. Not so much a level requirement more than a skill requirement. Or even better that the 'Best Weapon' of a certain type won't even be recognizable until your skill is high enough. Similar to Fallout 3 where when you have a 20% in small guns, none of them do more than 14 damage, but when you get to 100% there are wide gaps in the amount of damage you can do between a pistol and the Chinese Assault Rifle
