Well, in Germany there was the 0,3,6,12,16, and 18 age restrictions for video games, and my parents were very strict when it came to those.
They were gamers, too, but they only played games like Mario, Sonic and such and never tried out one of the M rated classics like Half Life or Resident Evil.

I still remember how happy I was when I turned 12 because my parents allowed me to play Metroid Prime for the first time (a 12 rated game).
Really cool, but I still enjoy light-hearted games more than M rated games.

Technically, Mortal Kombat which I played in arcades and movie theaters and, owned on the SNES. That was eventually turned into an M game, right? If so then I was somewhere between 6 and, 8. As for the first one I owned that was officially an M, it was Duke Nukem 3D for the PC when I was...I guess 8. I don't remember things too good.

I've played M-Rated games pretty much from the moment I gained the dexterity required to use a controller, and I watched my Dad play them even before then. The only game I was ever not allowed to play was one of the Grand Theft Autos, and even that was only for a very short time. I've always understood the difference between fiction and reality, so I don't think this has had any negative effect on me whatsoever. I'll probably be very lenient in terms of age ratings if I ever have kids.

M rating didn't start in the UK for a while after it was established so we had BBFC (U, PG, 12 ,15, 18). I played my first 18 rated (M equivalent) game when i was 11/12.

I played my first M rated game at around 10 or 11 years old. It was Halo 2 and my brother and I would play it frequently with some neighbors. Good times.

My parents were pretty strict on the whole ratings front, but they didn't take it as gospel. I wasn't allowed to play M15 games, or even watch M15 movies, until they decided I was old enough. This was around 14, IIRC. My brother was held off them until he was 15 because he was, and is, a bit more aggressive than me. Same deal with R18 movies, although that was earlier. 16 for both my brother and I.

That's the thing though. People don't suddenly gain perspective or intelligence once they hit these arbitrary ages. People need to actually pay attention to their kids, and make the judgement calls. Imagine that! Actually having to put some effort into parenting! Almost seems a myth in this day and age!

I started playing Perfect Dark during the N64 days, not very much because my parents thought that the "M" rating meant something, despite Perfect Dark being the tamest M-rated game I've ever played (definitely should be rated T). I would have been 9 or 10 years old then. Other than that exception, it wasn't until I was in the Gamecube/Xbox days that I started playing M-rated games, starting with Halo and Resident Evil 0, around 11 or 12 or 13 years old.

15. Too put that in perspective, that's the same time my 11 year old brother started playing M-Rated games. It's fun having right-winged parents. Sex and swearing? That's bad. Guns and violence? Boys will be boys.
I dunno, I saw full frontal nudity before I was 10. I wasn't allowed cap guns until I was old enough to have money and go to the show with my friends. Even then it was more, well he's already got them.

OT: I don't know. M is a subjective rating which would apply to different games here than in other countries. Probably Tekken 2 when I was about 8. It's M rated I think.

First M Rated games I played were Mortal Kombat and Wolfenstein 3d both released in 1992 so I would have been 7. Fragging since '92.

12? Played Vice City. My favorite aspect was the ability to shoot clean off the heads of unsuspecting hookers with my sniper rifle. And then gun down any body fleeing the murder scene.

And hurray, i'm not a massive murderer shooting up schools with a sawn-off. I am not a massive danger to society. I am not disturbed and in need of immediate counselling for the Vietnam style trauma I experienced from playing a bloody game. I was incredibly successful in school, even better in college, and I am going to oxford university soon to study architecture. SO I CAN BUILD AND DESIGN SLAUGHTERHOUSES! MWAHAHHAHAHAHAA.

Let's see...

I think my first real play-through of an M-rated Game was at age 14 when I played through Halo 3. Games like Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed didn't follow until age 16. Even now, I disable blood if it's an option. I see how spraying someone's blood everywhere can appeal to some people, but for me, it's just a pointless gimmick. I'd rather go without it, and actually focus my attention on what I'm doing. Leaving a room full of bullet-riddled corpses Rambo-style or stalking an unsuspecting victim only to take him down with my Retract-o-Shank-1191 is fun, but I don't find it particularly cathartic.

I was nine when I first played Perfect Dark, and it's funny that while it was the most violent game I had played up to that point, the thing that shocked me the most was that bad guys said '*****' and 'god dammit' when you shot them.

I definitely played them from the instant i could use a controller successively, I still remember shitting my pants as a 5 year old playing resident evil with my uncle, and he also introduced me to doom 1 and 2, and i also was pretty damn good at mortal kombat (mained lui kang of course, who wouldn't want to be a kicking machine at that age?)

ages 7-10 I played games such as final fantasy and konkers bad fur day and many others, but i still remember mortal kombat/resident evil being my first mature games..
