I usually go for mages because who needs axes when you can disintegrate your enemies and all their mates with lightning, fire, ice and other colourful things followed by sucking on healing spells until you stop being dead.

I've been leaning towards Rogue occasionally as I enjoy being able to hide.

Oh, I love my fighting rogues - not so much ranger as assassin, I've never cared much for ranged combat when I can speed up the fight by getting up close and personal.

Fighters have all the fighting skills, but as long as I fight smarter, there's no fight I can't handle - whereas the thieving bit lets me get to the good stuff - Lying, Cheating, and Stealing - which, frankly, is what I enjoy about RPGs.

As for mages... meh. I mean, ooh, I push a button and fire happens, whoop-de-doo, there's no thought involved there. That or it's preposterously OP, and, again, no fun. I really don't care for it.

Mage.

That said, what I really like is if a game has the option of a bard, a character who can talk his or her way out of anything rather than resorting to raw firepower. I still remember the era of pacifist runs.

Although I'm not sure most people would count me as a Magi-Knight since I only use light armour for moving about and just keep a sword in one hand. Does that count?
I'd say it does. Pure mages use staffs (or in some cases specially enchanted daggers or swords, but those are generally only used for a boost in channeling their magic, not really for stabbing people :p) and wear robes. They certainly don't wear armor, to say the least, as it slows down their casting (in most games, that is).
Awesome, I'll stick by my answer then. It's certainly the character I'm planning to play as in Elder Scrolls Online. Good god I'm excited for that game.

It's actually really cool to see that the results are fairly even across the board. We like variety in our adventuring!

Just posing this question out of curiosity, but when you're playing an RPG in which you get to pick your class, which do you tend to gravitate towards/which is your favorite to play?

Yes yes, I know that there are numerous different classes beyond Fighter, Mage, or Rogue, but really when you boil every class down to it's core elements, it's one of those three: a caster, a rogue, or a warrior. Everything else is essentially a specialized version of one of those three.

Just to be fair, though, I'll go ahead and throw in the "combo-classes" as well in case we have some Magi-Knights or some such out there. :p

So which do you prefer and why do you prefer it?
What, no Cleric? Cheapskate ;)

I suppose Mage-Knight would be the closest thing.

To be honest I pretty much like all the archetypes equally, so it all comes down to the game itself.
But if I had to choose, it would probably be Mage or Battlemage.

I like being able to do a little of everything. It means a general preparation for many situations. Sure you're not as good as an expert, but knowing yourself, and knowing what's ahead tends to eliminate that need. With that said, it's harder for you to get caught with your pants down. Flexible training, immense preparedness.
In 3.5 I call that being a bard. :p

Still, now and then I wanna be something else. Wading into combat like a warrior/fighter especialy.

I live in New Zealand, situated approximately 200-300 milliseconds from the typical MMORPG server - so obviously my only option is a ranged class.

Because I'm in no goddamn hurry to endlessly chase opponents around the place furiously swinging my sword/daggers at them, but repeatedly being told they're out of my reach and having them dodge half my attacks because I might as well be telegraphing my attacks via text messages.

Plus what's the point of having to run from enemy to enemy bonking them with your sword when you can just stand in one spot and incinerate everything within a 50-yard radius?

Signed,
A Mage

I always play a mage because swinging a sword or firing a bow always seems a little dry next to hurling lightning and fire.

Mage. It's always a more challenging class to play and master. Plus spell effects can look really damn cool.

Sadly not an option on the poll!

Although if anyone's read the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks, I basically end up playing that type of character (despite only having read the books a month ago :p )
I love those books!

And my favourite class is definitely magi-knight. A heavily armored tank blasting fire at the enemy, with a sword for if things get ugly.

All of them, I suppose, depending on the game. Mage the least though, there are very few good magic combat systems in my experience.

Usually I'll start a new game as fighter to check out the combat system and switch out to ranger/full thief if it feels right.

I prefer to play as a rogue/thief.

I like being all sneaky and stabby while stealing everyone's shit.

I mean, those locked chests aren't going to loot themselves now, are they? :D
Quote for truth. Rogues may be rather fragile, but they are oh so fun and always end up with the best stuff.

Mages.

I tend to play nerdy mad scientist types, so that goes well with it.

A scientist/engineer/hacker in a scifi-setting.

Love me some ranged combat. Nothing is more satisfying to me in an RPG then to be able to drop all of your opponents before they even lay a finger on you.

When playing an RPG. In the past I usually played a cleric - which I notice is not listed in your poll - or the fighter equivalent, that is to say a paladin.

Lately I've played different combinations of mage.

This thread pops up way too often.
Well, my first choice is always a warrior. I prefer having good protection, medium damage and being up close with the enemies. If I can make them from scratch it tends to be more of a templar-styled class. Heavy armor, shield and some healing skill.

Ranger.

I like the stealth approach and generally prefer to handle nasties at a distance in games, but being able to mix it up in melee when I need to is a handy thing to fall back on when the excrement hits the fan.
