medium ...perhaps on hard. ive been a gamer for a long time now and my own gaming XP is high enough to do so. unless its something completely new, than easy, just to get the feel for it. I remember playing rockband on easy for the longest time...

Depends on the game type. Most games I'll leave it on normal. If it's a game I've already beaten, or a sports game, I'll put it on hard or expert.

RTS games are the exception. I like to relax when I play those, and try out all the tech for the civs. or races, so I'll put it on easy with 2-3 opponents. Normal with just 1 opponent. If's I'm playing co-op with my Uber-Good-At-RTS-Friend, we'll ramp up the difficulty to hard or expert with multiple opponents. I suck at micro-managing.

I start on normal, then after I've completed the game on normal I try hard.

I always go for the normal option, though I did complete Hitman Blood Money on Pro, but that was only because the AI is retarded in every other difficulty settinging.
I also completed STALKER: Oblivon lost on Hell, and it was still fairly easy (By stalker standards)

I normally start on Hard and then the next difficulty up. Maybe it is just me but games are stupid easy these days.

Normal, and then I just go from there.

On Budokai 3 I am on Z3, that's 6 levels above normal. Now that's hard.

Depends on the game. Most of the time HARD (Bioshock, Half-life), but other times I got for medium until I get a feel for the game, then crank it up to the hardest difficulty(both STALKER and Crysis).

Unlockable difficulties are the most annoying thing. I prefer to start on the hardest difficulty but often I don't feel like playing a game through twice.

I always play on the default difficulty of normal games, unless that's painfully easy (the original Dawn of War, for example, was pathetic on normal because all the enemy troops had their damage and HP nerfed- I turned it up to hard for Winter Assault). I will NEVER turn a game down to easy, if I can't beat it on normal then I guess I'm stuck- this happened with Devil May Cry 3 (the original version, where the Japanese "hard mode" was rebranded as the Western "normal mode") when I got stuck on the Agni and Rudra boss. I will only play a game on hard if it's either a game I enjoyed enough to play more than once (Zone of the Enders is a good example for me) or if it's a game where the challenge comes from repeatedly doing the same thing progressively harder, such as Guitar Hero or Ouendan (I've taken both games up to Expert level).

I go on the hardest diffculty available to me. I've played games too long to be surprised by enemy positions, ambushes or the otherwise massive main characters. Most FPS's are the same to me just with different people so it's "play one play them all" so the only thing to seperate them is their respective difficulty.

I feel retarded and bored if I play a game on anything less than hard because for me the AI is either unable to shoot properly, have so little health that paper would kill them or do so little damage that I could walk past them with a pram and baby.

Racing games are similar. The only way to not win by 50 hyperbolillion miles is to put it on the hardest setting.
RPG's tend to not have any settings. Some do so I put those ones on hard but most don't.

But in essence, multiplayer is harder than the most advanced AI still (otherwise you would not die would you?) so the hardest difficulty is multiplayer due to the fact that no matter how good you are there is always someone better.

I always start with medium. If I feel like playing through it again; I'll play it on hard or easy (easy just so I see the ending again).

I usually start medium just to do the game with a challenge but not too frustratingly difficult and to see what the game has in store for me, then I go hard. (In COD4, there is not much of a difference between regular and hardened, so I usually play hardened)

Ninja Gaiden 2 medium was so hard, I had to play on the easy setting

If theres 3 ill go for the hardest, but if theres afew difficultys ill go for the 2nd from hardest. I like it if I can crank it up halfway through aswell instead of having to start a whole new save again.

Medium, average, normal.

Whatever its called depending on the game.

And if I liked the game enough, I will play through it again on the next difficulty up.
