Depends what game it is, on DMC4 I blazed through it on Dante must die mode for the kicks.

But usually normal difficulty

I use to be an easy rider. Once I played online against real people I started cranking up the difficulty. Now, I start everything on normal.

I'll typically start a game on hard because I like a challenge. If I don't get my butt kicked from time to time, I know that I'm not playing on a hard enough setting. For the second playthrough, I'll typically bump it up a notch to a higher setting. That being said, I hate when the "hard" setting on a game simply gives enemies more health, rather than a more sophisticated AI; if I see that, then I won't feel too bad about taking it down to medium.

I always play on easy first, then, depending on my interest in the game, I do it again on harder difficulties.

Most proud of reaching the Sniper Ambush in CoD 4 on Hardened, and beating Wanted: Weapons of Fate on all three.
Try beating the ferris wheel part of CoD on Veteran (or Mile High Club for that matter). That is a lesson in perseverance.
That's the part I mean, only on Hardened. I must've tried thirty times and STILL didn't get past it. What a pain....You got any suggestions?
With your back to the ferris wheel, if you run to the alley on the left where the bad guys spawn and camp there, you have a good line of sight and can probably hold it. Getting back to Macmillan is a pain, but good C4 placement can take care of that. Otherwise, I just cower over by the bumper cars, between the fence and the ticket booth on the right, and pray.

i usually play on easy if im not used to the game's(usually arcane in complexity) controls but by the time im used to the controls im pretty good into the game so i carry on playing its only when i finish it do i go "Shit. i could've got an achievement for every one of those levels if i just played on normal..." BUT..(cue epic music and union jack backdrop)..I PLEDGE FROM THIS POINT FORWARD TO DO ALL MY GAMES ON MEDIUM OR, if ive been drinking Relentless energy drinks, POSSIBLY HARD!

The hardest setting there is regardless of the genre, but coincidently my self esteem is lower these days.

I always start on easy, mainly cos I'm not really a gamer >///> And yeah, completing Guitar Hero on easy didn't feel like an acheivement, sure Medium was much harder but when something's difficult then you manage to do it you at least feel good that you acheived something.

That's a point, I should find some proper games instead of sticking to the casual ones.

starting to play on hard only but i admit to lowering the difficult level on Bioshock and the last level of Red Faction
That was one tough mission, but I found a good technique for doing it without dropping the difficulty:

Bring the electricity gun with you and when your tank starts to get fucked up, hop out and use the gun to hijack the nearest enemy vehicle. YOu can then plough ahead till you find another vehicle. Rinse and repeat.

Once you get to the part you have to leave the vehicles, the enemies are no longer infinite so just find some cover and take it slow.

Fight the boss in the tank by hiding down the hill behind the rocks and just popping up and firing grenades.

Hope that helps!
that's what i did a couple times but it didn't help all that much since i didn't buy the electric gun

It depends on the game really. I usually start on medium, but if the game becomes too difficult then I switch to easy.

I tend to play on Hard nowadays, but I usually don't bother if I have to unlock the difficulty by finishing the game. Don't replay games much nowadays.

If the game has a lot of difficulty levels I tend to go for the one that's one or two steps above default/normal.

I'll usually start on medium if it's a kind of game I'm used to, such as a FPS or a RPG if they give you a choice. If it's something I'm not used to, I'll start on easy. If I like a game enough, I'll eventually do a run through on the hardest difficulty though.

I play on easy if I'm by myself.

When friends come over, we go for the hardest difficulty available, and take turns passing it when we die.

Normal/medium
The only games I have played on hard are all of the HL2 games, and that was only because I felt I had to redeem myself for playing them on easy with cheats. Actually, I played HL2 on easy with cheats, and got out of using cheats for every game I buy before EP1 came out... I think. I don't remember. The point is I now play on normal for every game and no longer use cheats.
I like how normal/medium difficulties are challenging but leave room for error, because I will error... many many times.

I tend to play any game on hard for the first run through for the challenge, then if I deem it worthwhile, I go back and play on easy for the more cinematic experience.

That's overkill :p

I usually use cheats on my second run through a game, or if I just want to try things out, like "what do these guys do if I stand close to their tank?" or "do they EVER reload?".

Difficulties vary wildly from game to game. Just because something says "Normal" or "Easy" doesn't necessarily mean they are. Ninja Gaiden's Normal difficulty is twice as hard as any Hard difficulty I've played.

I usually start on Easy or Normal, depending on what game it is. If it's something I feel comfortable with like an FPS, I'll usually start on Normal.
