First time round? Male play as a male. However if I play through the game again, I will play as a female that time.

I play as whoever looks more visually appealing, bearing in mind that I am a straight male that means I normally play female characters, lets be honest would you rather look at man ass or women ass for the days worth of fallout you will be playing

50-50/depends on the game. Female in Mass Effect, because... Jennifer Hale. There is no other Shepard.

I rarely stick to one character build in an RPG.

I like to ROLE PLAY in my ROLE PLAYING GAMES.

And since I am male, I find male characters the easiest to relate to and to create as a picture of myself in the games world.

Male playing as female.

For whatever reason Ive always just preferred women. Their company and personality and conversation. It's easier for me to deal with their bullshit then it is for me to deal with guy bullshit too. That preference just sort of carried over into RPG's. I just... Like women better.

In MMOs I often believe in gender roles.

Tanks are female just because chicks in armor are incredibly hot.

Wizards, mages, conjurors, etc. can be either/or depending on what I'm in the mood for.

Healers are almost always male.

And your sneak types... well... I like to believe they are genderless, soulless, amorphous beings that simply exist to appease the children out there who still think ninjas are the coolest thing ever :p

Male playing as male. If it is an RPG where I can play as myself rather than a character given to me, I always feel slightly off when I try to play a female. It just doesn't sit right with me.

I'm a male and I generally play females, but I'm gay so that's my usual playing team anyway lol. ^_^

I'm a male, and I usually make an even split in terms of character gender.

Depends on the game really.

Male first and foremost. Makes it easier to identify with. On a second playthrough I might pick female. But if its a party based RPG where I get to create more than one, one of them will probably be female.

I play as male protagonist, most of the times, because I'm a male and I like to immerse myself in the game and female characters would put me off. However, I can still enjoy a good female character in a game (for example Konoko from Oni, she's pretty awesome character-wise), but if there is a choice, I'll go for male.

Depends on if it has an impact of gameplay. If it doesn't, I probably won't try both sexes except to test the character creator to see if I can even make a female I might find attractive.

I have always played as a male character and I'm male in real life. Ok I did made a female Guardian in the Guild Wars 2 but I deleted her once I got a feel to that profession (since you got five character slots in the beta). I just always prefer my character to be male as I view that character to repersent me in a way (a persona so to speak) well most of the time if the character is human.

I'm female and I almost always create male characters. I just find it easier to connect to male characters for some reason. Hell, in Dragon Age 2 I tried to play as Lady Hawke in my second playthrough and was so off-put that I couldn't play past the opening area in Kirkwall. I just love my derpy Dude!Hawke too much.

The only real exception is Shepherd. My Shepherd is always, always female and I love her more than all of my male characters. All of them.

I maninly play Planescape Torment so I don't even get to choose. But in other rpgs that I don't play as much I normally play as a guy and choose the worst possible names.

Female playing as a female if given the choice. I'll switch around when there are options that are only gender specific. (Like Dragon Age and Dragon Age II.)

I'll ALWAYS be femshep in Mass Effect though. I tried doing male Shepard in ME3 and I couldn't get past Mars. It just felt so wrong. (Jen Hale might have had something to do with it <3)

For me, it actually seems to be somewhat random.
I hereby demand a random/no preference option.
+1. I've played through Fallout 3 & New Vegas as well as Skyrim using female characters as well as males. Just depends on what sort of build I have in mind to begin with. Now I come to think about it though, my female characters tend to be my charismatic stealth ninja ones, and my male characters always seem to end up as a one man special forces unit.
