Simple enough poll. When playing RPGs, what gender do you typically choose as your main character?

I'm male. I play a male character first, then a female character on my second playthrough.

It depends on what the "canon" character's gender is. If there isn't one, almost always male. If there is one, whatever gender that is.

I typically rp as female (me being male). Mostly it depends on the class. In my mind certain classes are certain genders. For example Rogues and Sorcerers are female whereas fighters, rangers, and wizards are male. Rogues and Sorcerers just so happen to be my favorite classes to play.

Note: I used D&D classes but the same holds true for most systems.

Edit: There are games like Mass Effect where I absolutely hate one of the gender's voices and will only play the opposite gender.

I do something similar - I generally play male characters first, but that's partly because I often start an RPG with a soldier/warrior build, and then explore the more complex classes once I'm familiar with the environment. So a male character seems logical for the first build, but subsequent characters (rogues, adept in Mass Effect) often work better in my mind as female characters.

Pretty much this. First playthrough is with mr. generic badass, while if the games good enough to be worth a second playthrough I'll probably play a female character as one of the more exotic classes.

If the games good enough to be worth a second playthrough, might as well see it from every angle I figure.

I usually play my first playthrough as a male (and I'm a male myself), and if it's one of the games I want to see every possible conversation and line of dialogue (Baldur's Gate 2, or anything by Bioware, I guess) then I'll play through with a female character as well.

The fun part is when there are seduction, intimidate, and persuade dialogue options. At that point you have to play the game at least four times twice as each gender.

In RPG's, as well as most other genres, I always play as male characters. However in fighters, I'm always playing as a girl.

I pretty much alternate - start with a male character for my first playthrough, then do female for a second playthrough to see any different dialogue and things. After that I pretty much flip a coin for any further playthroughs.

I'm male and I play male characters for the most part. I do switch it up every now and then, but not often.

I don't usually role play? But when I do it's a male character, because I am a male and I can't imagine what being a female would entail. Well, I can imagine, but I don't do a very good job.

There is - it just hasn't been selected yet, so it isn't displaying in the poll results.
