Personally I have always felt Health Bars are more realistic, wounds just don't stitch themselves up...unless your Marcus Fenix.

Neither. If you get shot, you're not going to instantly just be okay if you sit still for a second and it doesn't take a predetermined amount of stabs before you're dead no matter where they are

I prefer health bars. Makes the game more of a challenge because you actually have to think about what piece of cover your gonna have to run to next rather than noncing around knowing that the health will come back in a while anyway

Amen and hallelujah.
I wish I could just run over a med-kit on the ground and get better. That'd be sweet.
I would say I enjoy regenerating health a bit more then health-packs, only because it puts more of an emphasis on having fun running around and shooting, rather thens scrounging for health packs. The only time I really enjoyed health packs (Normally it's just 'tolerable') was in Left 4 Dead, and that was because it fit the feel of the game: Survive.

I hate the pair of them.

If i get shot or hit let the Strength of the Hit and the area determine if im dead and if im not dead Cripple my dumb ass for getting in the way of a bullet.

Health Bars. While people do have a tendency to heal, it normally takes a couple of days to a couple of weeks for a scratch to heal. Regenerating health is something that only really applies to Wolverine.

Health Bars aren't very realistic. They regenerate when you eat and generally, a roast chicken you find in a trash can won't help much with internal hemorrhaging. The main thing with the health bay is that it shows your character isn't immortal and [for the most part] isn't Wolverine.

niether are realistic in fact if shot your "health" would be likely to deteriorate unless your wound was treated

i find health bars slightly more reallistic as they are meant only to be a representation of the damage taken

Health bars are completely stupid and nonsensical. At least regenerating health could be claimed to represent superficial damage and general pain that slow you down and make you more vulnerable until you shake it off.

Surviving a shotgun blast to the face only to later be killed by a butter knife to the toe is just straight up dumb. Screw health bars.

Technically regenerating health, only in a truly realistic game it would take about 6 months after getting shot >>

Yeah, bring back those good old fashioned health bars! At least with them you get an actual sense of danger

It depends what they put in the packs, I guess. If you see health as your stamina, the amount of time you can keep going before you die, then just plugging the wounds to stop the bleeding will keep you alive longer. Maybe there was a shot of adrenaline in there too, who knows? It makes (very slightly) more sense than health that simply regenerates. Unless you happen to be playing as Wolverine, of course.

Neither, they're both ridiculous. However, regenerating heath is far better from a gameplay perspective. Health bars have an unfortunate tendency to effectively cripple you and make you unable to complete the mission. And at least with health regen, the threshold is normally low enough to force you to behave reasonably realistically, taking cover and not charging blindly forward, while not punishing you for tiny mistakes.

Realism would be getting wounded and if you're lucky enough to survive via field medicine being rotated to a military hospital where after a period of recovery depending on the severity of the wound you would either rejoin a unit, not necessarily your unit or being rotated back home.

In terms of looking at game mechanics in a realistic light. Both at the same time. The human body has the potential to regenerate from even quite nasty wounds over a long period of time and medics/hospitals are on hand to help as best they can.

Neither are particularly realistic, but I'm going to have to choose health bars for their benefit to gameplay.

My biggest problem with regenerating health is that it makes any threat automatically seem less scary. I could be facing off against a towering beast, one that can knock my shields down to 1/4 in a single swing. I should be terrified. BUT, if I have quickly regenerating health...I'm not scared anymore. Getting hurt turns into a momentary annoyance instead of being potentially life threatening.

Another fine example. In COD: Modern Warfare, I could be looking at an entire street filled with enemies and instead of feeling fear, I feel confident, knowing I can mow them all down easily and regenerate any lost health in a matter of seconds. Compare this to Half-Life 2 where I can be terrified by a single head-crab if my health has been continually battered by other enemies. I think that's the way it should be done.

First of all niether are strictly realistic.
But given the circumstance I would at least say that the most realistic of the two is the regenerative health but only if it is from Halo or another sci fi shooter where the character has a shield. Because in Halo it isn't your health that's recharging it's your shield and so in some sense it's the most 'believable' out of all of them. Wounds don't regenerate but shield technology certainly could.

What's more realistic:
Getting shot in the face, lies down for 5 seconds and are completely ok.

Oooor

Getting shot in the face, miraculously survives, getting shot in the chest after 5 minutes, dies.

Captain Obvious knows.
Just my opinion.

Neither is realistic. In either case you have the capacity to absorb punishment that greatly exceeds that of mortal man and are not at all impacted by sucking chest wounds, shattered bones, ruptured organs or severe bleeding until the moment you collapse. The mechanism for getting one's health back is equally unrealistic - either you heal at a phenominal rate (a minor gunshot wound may take months to fully heal rather than mere seconds) or are instantly cured of your ills by the contents of a first aid kit (which itself will, at best, halt the damage being done).

Health bars but only when you have to take time to patch yourself up. Walking over med packs and being insta-healed doesn't count. The guy who said separate health values for body parts is on the right track too.
