Poll: What is the legal age for adopting a child.

Okay I'll just come out, up front with the factors, ect.

-I personally hate my dad.
- when I'm 14 my friend will adopt me
- He is 18
so the question is, is it legal for an 18 year old to adopt a 14 year old.
Him and I will probably be living with his mom, and future dad.
His family is okay with me. Everyone hates my dad , ect ect.

Just a note to everyone who has replied.
My dad has abused me when I was younger, he has stopped now, because I can fight back.
He has illegal DvDs in his closet, and keeps me around because its the law.
so could I use the abuse against him to get me out of the house?

Um... Your friend can't simply adopt you out from under your dad! You don't have the authority to make a decision of that calibur at 14 years of age, he has parental and guardianship of you. If he's convicted or dies, Maybe, but your friend can't just adopt you away form your father...


God, 13 year olds these days...

EDIT: You have to prove one of these to a judge:
1) Abusive father
2) Inadequate care for the child (abusive father)
3) Involved in iollegal activities
4) Dad died.

Even if dad dies, you have a god father or moth and at 14 you're not considered mature enough to decide where you go, so you'll automaticaally go to the god parents.

I hate my dad is not a good enough excuse either

Your hating your Dad is not sufficient for you to be adopted by some other random person (I know this is your friend I'm talking about, but as far as the government is concerned, that's exactly what he is, since you have no blood ties). @Celtic_Kerr put it quite simply, unless you Dad is physically or morally abusive (and even then, you'd need medical proof of this), or unless he's incarcerated and there is no other legal guardian, there's nothing you can do, your ass is his until you're of age.
Out of curiosity, how do the parents of your friend think of this "master plan"? Do they have their say in the matter, I think, since you'd basically be living under their roof.
Also, what are your grounds for hating your Dad? And is it really just you or is it everybody? (You said "I personally hate my Dad", and then said "everyone hates my Dad")
I hate to be like this, but if he's feeding, clothing you, and providing education, you could show a little more gratitude...

I did not think of pregnancy... Hm... Then again the legal age in quite a few areas of Canada was moved from 14 - 16, so that might stir ALOT of issues depending on where they live

I don't really know how US law works in those cases, but in Poland if you are 16 years old girl and get pregnant with a 18+ guy you can get married and thus legally be free of your parents influence.

We don't know where you're from, so I'll assume it's the United States.

You cannot be adopted unless you have no legal parent or guardian. If your parents were convicted, died, or you were emancipated, you could be adopted. Unless one of those is true, this isn't happening.


But yeah. That's ignoring how out there the rest of this is.

I know in Canada:
- At 16 you can have sex with anyone up to 4 years older than you
- once you hit 18 you can have sex with anyone over the age of 18, and anyone below 18 as long as they are not 4 years younger than you

But the OP said they they want to be adopted once they hit 14, which would make them 13.

I think our marriage laws work the same as your's; as long as you can legally have sex with someone, you can marry them.

Pretty much this, if his parents are seriously OK with the random idea of their son adopting a friend then I'm pretty sure they would be fine you just moving in.

Seriously I can't think of a stranger situation than your friend adopting you, at 18 he would have all the legal responsibility of having a teenage son. If your going to do anything then try and at least get his parents to adopt you, then your friend will be your brother rather than your dad.

The only problem in such case is that the father still have full legal right to the kid and can request him being turned over, else it would be kidnapping. That's why smart kids run far far away from home instead to closest friends.
The downside? You have to work for your own food, clothes and find some sort of shelter while avoid abuse of all sorts, and it's probably not easy to find a 'decent' job as a 14 year old.

In Finland you have to be 25 to adopt a child, I have no idea what the age limit is for the child. I mean new born, young children I know nothign about that.
