Probably a short saber/cutlass. Very quick and versatile. Also, saber is the coolest word ever.

Either that, or an Arming Sword. Not as clumsy (to my mind, anyway) as a long sword, but not as stubby as a short sword.

I know they're not nearly as good as modern media makes them out to be (in fact I have heard they were actually rather inferior to their European counterparts), but I do love the look of a katana.

For actual practicality sake though, probably a broadsword or longsword.

Bastard sword, mostly just because of this baby....
...Longclaw, sword of the Mormonts of Bear Island and Jon Snow.
A Song of Ice and Fire made me a partial sword nut. I have no issue with this.

My favorite would be the two-handed jian. I love its elegent design, extremely light weight, paper thinness and flexability. Plus it's pretty long (A guy has to compensate somehow^^)
If we're talking Chinese swords, give me a Dao. Or better yet, a pair of Dao.

AFAIK, outside of D&D, a longsword is 2handed and a bit longer than the short sword, which is one handed., though nicely pigeonholing things is a modern idea.

The katana is very pretty, and minimalistic and all, but you need something to protect your hand, even if it is a bit ugly. A crosshilt at the very least.

Eh, you have to make the thing much heavier, and having alot of moving parts to jam or clog with gore, and heavy things spinning up and down the length to throw the balance off.

A conventional sword would be much lighter, less cumbersome and cheaper, while still removing limbs nicely.

Powersword.

Pft, they aren't real lightning claws unless they've got a "unique" bolter attachment like everyone seems to have nowdays.

aesthetically speaking: the katana!!! nothing beats this elegant, swift killing machine

personnaly: the epee, due to the fact, that i fence using this weapon

there are also weapons which i would like to experience, like the saber (being a fencer i might try it one day) and medieval type long sword

I've had training with broadsword, longsword, saber, cavalry sword and rapier, and I gotta say I found the broadsword to be the one I'm most comfortable with. I really like the combo of broadsword and dagger.

I love the Zweihander. It literally means two handed in German.
And it means, "I am death incarnate! Behold my visage and tremble!!!!" in all them other languages. I'm obviously throwing my hat in with Zweiheinder. Long, powerful, parrying guard!
It's not the smartest choice, but back when I did SCA I used a zweiheinder, gained instant props for dropping a knight who had a pole arm.

Zweihänder. No contest.
Zweihänder love all round!

I probably wouldn't use a sword but if I had to pick one it would be this.
