So what in your opinion is the deciding factors of a perfect game? I just bought and finished Portal today (been meaning to since it came out and it's like £3 at the moment) and I've never been so impressed in my life. I think I actually only have two things in mind when playing a game:

1. Uniqueness
2. Total lack of seriousness

Games that get too serious really start to bore me and I actually didn't realise Portal was funny. It was such an awesome game and was making me laugh constantly, especially towards the end.

Story and immersion are what gets me the most. I need to be completely wrapped up in a game to actually call it "perfect". Then again, no game is really perfect.

I'd go with story.
Final Fantasy VII is still my fav game because of the epic story.

Action games used to be a form of storytelling that rivaled epic poetry or the best hollywood movies. Halo I was an amazing example. The gamplay is equally as important, though. Controls have to be easy to learn and difficult to master. Realism isn't that important, because Okami was good anyway.

Couldn't really single out just one, but humour isn't really important to me, just an added bonus.

I have to say immersion. The graphics can be bad, the story a little shabby, and have absolutely no humour, but so long as it is a convincing world, I'll play it to death. For example Fallout 3 has a, lets face it, a pretty lame story but the world is incredibly convincing, and is filled with life. Diablo 2 is anotehr good example, very poor graphics and the story isn't exactly A grade material, but for some reason you find yourself really wanting to defeat the evil. Immersion is everything.

Gameplay for the win!!!

Tetris, Pacman, Defender et all didn't need fancy plots, mind blowing graphics or humour to drive millions of gamers to play them. They had great gameplay which is an art thats lost on the majority modern gamers these days. Quite frankly its sad that ingenuity and inventivness has taken a backseat to formulaic sequels with enhanced visuals.

I'll go by experience and say Gordon Freeman ... yup.

In fact the only thing better would be Gordon Freeman with a portal gun, but the universe would probably collapse in sheer awesomeness.

I like a unique story and gameplay. A game that fits these two together nicely is high on my list.

It really depends on the genre to me. For example, story is essential in an RPG but not in a platformer. Humour is good for casual party games but not survival horror etc etc.

I don't think there could ever be a "perfect game".

Though if there could, a key point would be making dying amusing. Kind of like in "GTA IV" I would hurl myself out of a chopper in the middle of a mission. I would have to load a previous save file, but to me it was worth it seeing Niko bouncing down a skyscraper like a human tennis ball to finally land on top of a hotdog-salesman.

But maybe that's just sadistic little me?

Story, gameplay and a ginormous open space to frolic in. That's what I call a "perfect" game.

But really, the only "Perfect" game is called "Real Life".

Surely gameplay needs to be there? I don't care how complex the story is, if the gameplay is rubbish that is inexcusable. Games are meant to be PLAYED, so story, realism and humour comes a fair way down the list of importance for me.

In answer to the OP, surely the perfect game should be good at all those things?

Immersion, and gameplay are at the top for me. Thief: Deadly Shadows really put me in Garret's shoes.

I disagree. As Yahtzee said, "reality is a cruel and unintuitive place with frustrating gameplay mechanics." Reality with a few major adjustments would be good.

I would say game play and immersion, though immersion above anything else. If I can become wrapped up in a world so much that I care about the characters and believe in the surroundings, then to hell with game play and story(though the story should be aiding in the immersion process) I love it!

Also humour is subjective. Whilst I don't tend to laugh at cock/tits/farts jokes everything else, intended of not, is fair game. For that reason Majoras Mask was wonderful. I understand that others wouldn't find parts funny that I do and vice versa. Anyhows most deliberate humour that developers put into the game is so contrived as to not be so.

I'd say all, but if I'd have to choose one, I would go with Story. Anything can be average, even bad, but I want a good, understandable story.

I think I heard somewhere that HL3 is going to have the Portal gun so you might just see what happens haha.
