I've decided that I am going to play Mass Effect. Now do you think I should get Mass Effect 1 or just jump straight to 2, my dear Escapist? Let me know what you think.

Play them in order, 1 first then 2, otherwise you won't know what the hell's going on in the second one and you'd have missed out of a very good game in the process.

Get both. It's always nice to play a sequel straight after the first one.

They're good games!
I agree buy both, play them directly after each other.

Feeeellls good man.

I recommend a linear progression, beginning with the first and, if you like it (and you fucking well should), moving on to the second.

You'll be pretty clueless about a lot of stuff if you skip ME1 and head straight into ME2, you really should play them in order.

If you really don't want to play ME1 (which i'm guessing is the case since you're asking), at least head to the wikis and do as much reading as you can. ;)

There is no point getting Mass Effect 2 without the first. It's like watching 'The Empire Strikes Back' or 'The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers' without seeing the one before. Sure you can enjoy the story and you will have a basic idea of the universe and all that, but you will lose pretty much all characterisation and back story.

Get both, you will miss out on many plot and humour points in the second without playing the first.

The way that they made the story is so that you can enjoy ME2 with out playing the first one. You don't have to play the first one to enjoy the second one, but it doesn't hurt to play both.

They say that ME2 was made so that you didn't have to have played the first, but really you want to play them both, there is something missing from the experience if you don't! :)

This x1000. Never, ever jump into anything story-driven without starting from the beginning.

Thanks everyone. Just went to Steam and am getting the first one now. I just wanted to make sure that if I skipped straight to ME2 if I would be missing out on a big part of the story, and you confirmed my belief that I would be missing out.
