I like to play support classes that can also go their own way.. So summoners are my favorites.
I just wish games made them better, they often are lacking .. then again lineage 2 and early rappelz might have spoiled me.

The last time I put any serious effort into an MMO was when Dark Age of Camelot was still a thing. I rolled a Paladin back then until it was nerfed to high hell. I like being support but also packing a punch.

Honestly? I like everything. Class preference for me very much depends on what I'm in to at the moment. I might prefer support classes one day and pure dps or tank-types the next day.
So basically, when I choose a character it all comes down to what looks cool. Heavy spiked armor, great balls of fire, smiting your enemies in the name of justice, controlling nature etc, are all cool. This makes it easy to find something I like.
My playstyle, however does not change. No matter what character, I'm usually very reckless in combat and often put my own life at risk trying to save my mates even if I'm playing a class that implodes if someone as much as sneezes in a close proximity.

I do have a slight preference to classes with at least some kind of mobility. Leaping, Teleporting, that kind of stuff.

I tend to play a variety of classes, to get a feel for what has the most entertaining mechanics and what makes them tick, so that I know how to best cripple opponents and leverage allies. That being said, I usually play healers more often than anything else - most groups in traditional MMOs live and die by their healing, so the healer makes or breaks most groups, especially when PUGging. Heal management can be extra difficult and extra responsible(IE when the party is being pressured hard and you can tell you won't be able to save everyone, forcing you to make split-second decisions on who to let die), but that's a part of the fun - on a good run with a moderately bad group, you can feel like the only real player around, managing a bunch of PC-shaped summons.
Other than that, I also often run tanks because it's fun to get into the thick of things every now and then and just watch the blows bounce off. It also helps, that tanks, next to healers, are usually the most important characters to keeping the group alive in classic trinity dynamics, and CC spellcasters, because I just like mages and there's something both trollish and aikido-like elegant about subduing a powerful enemy to the point of uselessness with a few well placed skills.

I play basically everything.

The MMO I've played the most is Guild Wars 2 and while I started off playing Warrior the most, by now I really don't have a main character any more.

I play Necromancer, Warrior, Mesmer and Guardian in World Versus World. I play Engineer, Thief, Ranger and Mesmer in PvP. I play Elementalist, Warrior and Guardian in PvE content. Specific builds and classes for specific purposes.

I haven't bothered with many MMOs but I always like to go a Summoner (like a Necro/Warlock) if that is an option, otherwise I look out for the most interesting to me. I especially love it when the summons can be sent far and it can automatically defends.

I play them all really, and it depends on the game and my mood at that time. I probably play more sneaky/rogue types than anything else, but if the games got a good paladin style class, I'll gleefully wade into a battle wielding holy fire.

I also really enjoy playing healers and controllers. Honestly, most MMO's, i've got a character for each class (except necro/warlock types, I don't play those). So I can't really give you ONE answer. I play them all from time to time.

Where is the healer in your poll? No priest/shaman? Shame on you.

I play heals. I like knowing i can make of break a team. That and if you annoy me, well, i won't kill you, but i'll throw just a little fewer heals your way to scare you xD.

I tend to play ranged classes such as mages, hunters, or gun wielding characters in MMOs. I tend to suck at close combat because it is to hectic and fast paced for me. My favorite ranged classes are the Smuggler/Sniper from The Old Republic. Being able to down anywhere from 2-4 enemies in the span of a few seconds is pretty awesome.

My mains in each MMO:

Swordmaster custom build - Asheron's Call
Paladin - EverQuest
Warrior - WoW
Mining/Industry - EVE

Of course I've had alts of other classes, usually wizard, that have ended up almost as high level as the mains.

I'm typically an excellent DPS player. I really enjoy managing resources as efficiently as I can so I can put out the maximum potential DPS for any situation. Typically I've played ranged casters for the entirety of my MMO career. I did recently make the switch to melee classes since 15 years playing the Sorcerer/Warlock was starting to burn me out.

I'm currently playing a Retribution Paladin in WoW. Switched from Warlock to Paladin this tier to fill a gap in my guild's roster. I'm honestly glad I did, I've had a blast. The class is pretty flexible as far as damage potential goes. It's a great class in AoE and cleave fights and has some godlike burst damage every few minutes. Let me whore a gameplay video I uploaded recently!

I also play a Monk in FFXIV. I really enjoy the methodical, heavy strike style of the Monk. It's a fun class to play, has excellent single target DPS and has some of the coolest looking armor and weapon models in the game.

Anything tanky. I always end up tanking in MMOs, simply because every time I see someone fuck it up, I can't bear to sit by and let it happen, so it's better if I just do it myself...

Mainly healer classes because I don't trust others to actually do it properly, but I also play the Tank too because I don't trust others to do it properly.

Other than that I like melee warriors/berserkers because hitting stuff in the face is more satisfying than standing 20 feet away and spamming arrows/spells.

TL;DR
1. Healer
2. Tank
3. Berserker
4. Everything else

As the name might imply, I am always forced quite happily into a healing role. Some may find it dull and boring but I find it fun. Second would just be ranged DPS. I'm not the biggest on melee classes in any game, though I will play them if I feel they are fun.
In other words,
1. Healer
2. Ranged DPS
3. Melee DPS
4. Tanking

I haven't played MMOs for a very long time, until recently when I started FFXIV.

I played the trial of FFXIV and started as a Warrior as normal (I usually play the strong, 2-hand weapons type of character), but I hate tanking. After realising the Marauder was both a tank class and boring as all fuck, I tried out some other classes and eventually landed on Arcanist.
In the full game, I'm currently a Summoner. As far as I can tell, it's as close to a Warlock as FFXIV gets.

I just love having to manage poisons across multiple targets, and managing the pet (using AoE in appropriate places, etc.), supporting healers with my crappy heal when they forget to do their job or waste all their MP, and healing the pet too. As it's developed I've got buffs to think about, as well as my own AoEs and abilities that play off of others.
Basically, there's a lot more to it than pressing the O button and then pressing the X button sometimes, which seems to be an issue most of the melee classes in FFXIV, and MMOs in general, suffer from. (Even looking at end game strategies, for some classes it's just a case of using attacks in the same specific order until the target dies. No thought. Not fun.)

My experience with my WoW Warrior back in the day was much the same. Hamstring, Rend, mash Mortal Strike and wait for my UI to tell me I've critted so I can use Overpower. 8 4 1111111111 7 111111.
That's as deep as it ever got. Hell, it only got as deep as that quite late into the game.
The worst part was everyone asking if I was a tank, and nobody ever wanting a DPS Warrior.

No love for Priest/Cleric, my favourite. Shame on you, OP, for omitting one of the Trinity.
I gravitate towards support roles as DPS sounds just too boring most of the time. And I'm also quite resistant to verbal abuse so when shit hits the fan and everyone piles up on support/tank/jungle/whathaveyou I generally don't mind. I do like my healers a bit sturdier, more of the DnD Cleric than WoW Priest, so Shaman it was. Some fun has been had, but MMOs generally don't do it for me, though I've tried several.
I honestly can not believe I forgot to list Priest.... I am so sorry. one of the legs of the holy trinity! I was certain I had it on there at one point... Must have accidentally backspaced it out///

Hunter/Ranger/Archer type has been a perfect fit for me since day one of playing any RPGs, especially MMOs:

Can I kill things from far enough away that I can just run away if it goes bad/I got too ambitious? - Check!
Can I feel like an awesome sniper by one shot critting something before it even sees me? - Check!
Can I keep any fight mobile, kiting opponents into ambushes, and making use of available terrain to my advantage? - Check!
If it's a Pet-class variant (which many of those ranged types are) I also get a resurrectable party member I can always abuse as well - "Hold off this unkillable enemy for long enough so I can get to safety" is rarely acceptable for human party members, but a Pet will do that every time! :D

I seriously love playing all of those kinds of characters, and as a Hunter in WoW I also had my all-time favorite ability in Feign Death! Every night of progression raiding, where our guild wiped multiple times per night learning encounters, I always managed to survive some of the wipes by running off into a corner and playing Possum. I always absolutely hated dying, whatever the circumstances, so any wipe that I survived felt like a victory! ;)

Though I haven't played on since the Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft, I generally played Warlock. It really depends on the mechanics. I play rogue characters in just about every kind of RPG, but when it comes to MMO's, stealth just isn't very satisfying.
