Poll: What MMO class do you play and why?

In the MMOs I play I look for something fulfilling and rewarding, but most MMOs don't really give me what I want. While I have tried big name MMOs like WOW and GW2 I wasn't a good fit for them no matter what class I tried. I really wanted to like GW2 too.

I bounce between three MMOs these days; Eve Online, Firefall and Tera. Eve Online doesn't really have classes because it's just a sandbox that gives you opportunities to do whatever you want so that doesn't fit your criteria. Firefall's classes don't really fit your criteria I think either, but for what it's worth I play as a recluse which uses poison based weapons and abilities. Tera has classes but most of those aren't as generic as they appear - Tera's warrior class is a real challenge to master while most MMOs I've tried have had warriors as one of the easier classes to play. My main character in Tera is a reaper which is a ranged melee character. I don't like what reapers are and how they look (little girls pretty much and there's no choice for anything else,) but I find the combat so awesome I can overlook the reaper's negatives completely. Here's a reaper video that demonstrates how versatile the class is.

At the end of the day I think finding a game with a class and gamestyle that suits you is more important to find than fitting yourself into a defined archetype for the benefit of the game. My mains pick me; it's not something I really have a choice in - they either fit or they don't.

the last MMO I played on a regular basis was The Secret World and it started to bore me within a month, I only kept playing because it was easy to switch classes for your character.

In regular games, I tend to play Rogues more often because I got tired of people playing the stupid rogue instead of the smart rogue.

The rogue that has caltrops at the ready, who needs a cigarette after playing down bear traps down a single spaced hallway, who realizes that just because you rolled a 20 on your stealth check doesn't mean that NONE of the orcs in the camp see you.

..... I play too many pen and paper RPG's ;~;

In video games, I tend to play the thief/rogue role too, simply because they often have higher DPS and in those games you always get party members who fill the other roles.

When soloing or in PVP I like playing a squishy but mobile melee (ie the mage killer class) which is usually a rouge or hybrid because it fun. In group PVE however I often go for ranged dps or a controller if it's a game where that is actually useful (I prefer controller but in a lot of games you're better off just killing things quick).

The only role that really doesn't appeal is tank although I haven't given it much of a chance. I am making a tank build In TSW right now as they are the hardest to find for a group and combat isn't the highlight of this game anyway. I tend to love the theme with minion classes, who doesn't want their own personal army or beast? but they are often really boring to play although I did like my MM Necro in GW1.

GW1 has denial and skill interrupting as role which was fun but I SUCK at it.

Usually a melee DPS but I can do well with a glass cannon too. If there's high damage to be made, I'm all over it. My first MMO - EQ, I played a ranger - both melee and bow after PoP expac, same in Vanguard, rogue, warrior, and destro warlock in WoW, and currently, I have a templar, sorcerer, and nightblade in ESO. They all have their strengths. The templar has a wide range of class abilities - melee, range, and healing, plus I just love bashing enemies into submission with my shield, the sorc is reliable on-point DPS dealer, though I have to game the skill system a bit to pull it out, and the nightblade is my crit machine/surprise killer. Squishy but lethal on the first hit.

Thieves or something similar, or really any character with cool weapons and high speed.

If that sort of build isn't possible, usually a support character like a cleric or a buffer. Usually so that I can be super annoying but my party has no choice to put up with me because I'm the only thing keeping the from failing their checks against the enemy's gamebreaking stun spell.

I'm typically an excellent DPS player. I really enjoy managing resources as efficiently as I can so I can put out the maximum potential DPS for any situation. Typically I've played ranged casters for the entirety of my MMO career. I did recently make the switch to melee classes since 15 years playing the Sorcerer/Warlock was starting to burn me out.

I'm currently playing a Retribution Paladin in WoW. Switched from Warlock to Paladin this tier to fill a gap in my guild's roster. I'm honestly glad I did, I've had a blast. The class is pretty flexible as far as damage potential goes. It's a great class in AoE and cleave fights and has some godlike burst damage every few minutes. Let me whore a gameplay video I uploaded recently!

I also play a Monk in FFXIV. I really enjoy the methodical, heavy strike style of the Monk. It's a fun class to play, has excellent single target DPS and has some of the coolest looking armor and weapon models in the game.

Your monk outfit is very similar to mine.....

Shame I'm a PLD main at present looking to get into DRK.

BEHOLDEN TO THE MORBOLS DEN

I like tanking a lot, being in control and pushing the group and finding the most efficient way to manage damage and my own dps output is a lot of fun and very challenging.

There's not even a pure healer option

No love. No love at all.
Yep, healers get no love...

But hey, we have all the power over the group, so we are the real ones in control, many are those who thought that sassing me during raids was a wise idea.

So yeah, I go the healer, I like the responsibility and I am more confident in my ability to keep everyone alive than dealing damage. I also enjoy tanking, mostly because I like whacking things with my axe. I play FFXIV by the way.
Pls. All the power.

I am the tank, I am priviliged by divine right and can kill you all much faster than the healer can. Y'all are but dogs on my leash.

I love you and your fabulously competent heals though <3

*laughs as you get Ahk Morn'd into the dust*

Also, why do I see a Miqo'te in that pic? Did you abuse yer fantasia!?
Whats that, hallowed ground? Stand over the healer as you split Ahk Morn with him, laughing maniacally.

I play FF14, and main a Dragoon, for now. I wanted to roll a Dark Knight but those weren't in the game, and won't be for a couple more weeks. (impatience intensifies)

but in general I lean toward 'melee DPS', Dragoons, Monks, Ninjas, or more DPS based tanks, Warrior, and from the looks of it, Dark Knight.

I've pretty much always been that way to. Back when City of Heroes was still with us I was HUGELY into Stalkers and Brutes (especially after the changed Stalkers) mostly Brutes, cause o.0 damn the shit you could get away with.

Whatever the tankiest class is usually. In my few years of WoW my Paladin Magnes was generally my favourite to play because most agro mechanics and abilities were simple to understand and more importantly, didn't require uber rare gear to be good enough for raiding. All you had to do was find whatever gear boosted your defence as much as possible to give healers time to top you up again, and while soloing got a bit longer you were much less likely to die from a stray patrol or gank. Also the counter to my mortal enemy, the Rogue-type.

I like tanking because you're the one to set the pace of group raids, the closest thing such a group has to a 'leader' since you usually have to lead the charge. Your role is straightforward so it's easy to grasp when you've failed in that role (whenever a strong enemy hits anyone but you with something that isn't area of effect or unavoidable). While some misplaced blame in a wipe is inevitable, the most common target in any of the MMOs I've played is the healer.

I wasn't so into Tankers in City of Heroes since I was soloing a lot of the time, but my Scrapper had enough agility-boosting powers to make tanking possible as well (in fact I remember one of my ultimate powers was Elude, which for 20 seconds makes your Evade Rate 100%... so you literally can't be hit by anything and your character will be constantly doing the dodge animation when being attacked by gunfire), having better than average endurance and lots of stun attacks. I've now done nearly all of the classes in SWTOR, and ranged tanks like Vanguard and Powertech are probably the easiest ones to pick up and play. Playing a Commando right now and they're almost as durable as Vanguards even if they can't tank. Gotta love Mortar Barrage, Flechette Mine and Concussion Charge- ideal for crowds.

I favour DEEPS. Doesn't really matter if ranged or melee I like DEEPS. I don't have the patience for tank or healer.

My favourite TOR characters (which is really the only MMO I play right now) are the hardcore DPS ones (especially sniper advanced class for the agent).

I tend to like to play ranger/hunter classes. Mostly because I really like bows and crossbows, and I like to have a pet tank for me. Curiously, though, on Guild Wars 2, I ran with a Warrior, which is very out of character for me, because I hardly ever play a melee class, yet I decided to main one on Guild Wars. Strange.

I've been messing around in alot of mmos, but recently I've been sticking with GW 2 and I have to say: the engi may be the most unique class I've seen. I mean sure, you can play him as a turret bot AA ranged class, but his true strenght lies in the INSANE amount of shit he can do with his weapon kits. Basically, a special subset of your skills is dedicated to gadget kits you can pull out and switch between at any time, giving you whole new sets of skills and abilities. The engi is the class with the most available skills in game at any one time. You can start a fight with a salvo from your gun, before switching to a flamthrower to roast a bit, then move on to grenades stacking debuffs and doing dmg or pull out an elixir gun that doubles as dot+dps and debuff clearing set of skills. Each kit gives you 6 new skills to use and the combinations you can do are insane. I used to play mele dps or tanky characters (with the retri pala beeing a fav for a long time), but the engi of GW 2 just takes the cake as most interesting class I ever played.

I usually go for any kind of stealth class. I've always loved the idea of stealth and subtlety, but often times I'm just in the mood for some steamrolling havoc, in which case I'll play something tanky that hurts a lot.

Aside from that, I often find myself enjoying almost any class or role.

Other: Druid.

I fell in love with druids in Everquest / Everquest 2. They are also top notch in WoW.

Anything tanky. I always end up tanking in MMOs, simply because every time I see someone fuck it up, I can't bear to sit by and let it happen, so it's better if I just do it myself...
Based on your avatar I would have guessed Wizard.

OT:
I always play the Wizard/mage type classes. I just find the others boring. When I look at the characters and my choices are guy who can hit stuff, guy who can sneak and hit stuff, guy who can shoot stuff with a bow and guy who can control the fundemental forces of the universe with their mind I know who I am picking.

To be honest very hard for me to say, I love the idea of a paladin but tankiness isn't really my style, I tend to lean more towards a sort of hybrid between a warrior/thief and a mage, using conventional blades like swords or axes but also using magic to enhance said abilities
