Now this has more to do for RPGs or any thing that involved leveling which in term raises your damage tolerance to pain and maybe new skills. And sorry i am using WoW for my example.
Say for example you were starting WoW brand new because a close friend or some thing to that effect convince you to join. Now you join and he offers you one of two things.
1: he just gives you a high leveled character with all of his armour and weapons and all that stuff
2: power levels you till your a very high level

Now i would say no completely to him. Level my guy the hard way and not even ask for money to get started. That way i know how my guy works i have fought with him and created strategies to best fit my style of play. But hey maybe you people sitting at your computers reading this might take a different option. Sorry for using WoW as the example

Well the whole appeal of RPGs is being attached to a character or party that you develope from total weakling to the Slayer of Gods. Haveing someone else power level or taking a high character ruins that. I would not be caught dead buying WoW character. I am already attached to my troll mage(at least back when I played it).

Man, I level by myself. The best way to work things is, like you said, "creating strategies to best fit [your] style of play."

Level myself. If I can't handle leveling myself, they might as well just get a bot because I won't know how to play.

If one of my friends wanted me to come back to WoW, or D2, or anything, and I (for some reason) didn't have my account, I would want some help getting back on my feet, yes.

IF I was just starting the game, as you say?

I would say no. The game should draw me in. Not having automatic "better stuff" than other people my level. In WoW, say, I wouldn't mind getting a couple bags and maybe 1g for my skills, but nothing like him leveling a character for me...

But normally, I wouldn't want any outside help. My character is my character. I want to level it myself, I want him/her to be who I want him/her to be.

And I'd want to get there on my own.

I would level by myself. I might accept help to accelerate the process, but not full-on powerlevelling.
