I just stuck with the default John. Also I would not take anyone named Ragnar seriously.
Yeah, John is a good military name. Strong, leaves it open for moral interpretation, simple, and fits the 'standard soldier' vibe that makes units more efficient.

If you want a more original name, how about Chris (with forearms bigger than his head No! Stop that, Bio!), Joseph, Tony, Gary, Alexander, Samuel?

One of the great rules of good sci-fi is to take a normal name and change just one letter...John becomes Vohn, Jane becomes Jaze, etc...which makes it distinct but somehow familiar. Or maybe I just made that up.

My first Shepard was named Batman. And yes, this Female Shepard. All my many other Sheps have various silly names like Rasta, Cruella de, Douche von, Mitchell, etc.
But if you want a serious yet badass name, you gotta call him Spike Shepard.

Okay, here's the list so far in alphabetical order:

Adrian Sheperd
Alexander Shepard
Arthur Shepard
Joshua Shepard
Lance Shepard

It says that there's about 10 or so hours to go for the download time. Once it finishes downloading, I'm going to have an actual poll of my top 10 ideal Shep names, or however many fit in there.

If you ever decide on making a female Shepard, I recommend the name Cybil. As for male Shepard, I don't know what to tell you.

Pick a name of the appropriate gender from another piece of media you enjoy. My main Shepard's name is Tiphaine.

You could make his first name Mister, ensuring a few hilarious scenes where Shepherd insists on being overly formal with everyone he meets. Or you could name him Who as a nod to a certain Abbott and Costello sketch...

But if you INSIST on being boring, then Marcus, Dirk, Xavier, Leon, Duncan, Godfrey, Bernard, or Vincent will do. If you ALSO insist on being some namby-pamby goody two-shoes in-bed-by-eight type (let's face it, Renegade is just WAY more fun), can't hurt to name him after one of the Roman emperors (the obvious choices being Nero or Augustus).

Pretty much this,
My (male) Paragon play through is Taffer Shepard from the Thief game series.
My (female) Renegade play through is Applejack Shepard from the My Little Pony TV show.

I find that Classical Antiquity has some great names.

Zeus, Maximus, Scipio, Ovid, Pythagoras, Odysseus, etc.

I name all my girls that I play as off of something from classical antiquity. So far: Constantinople, Rome, and Pandora.

I've found that you can never beat "Bob" for simplicity and... I guess that's about it actually.

You could also use your own name, if it suits your RP style.

Or "Howard", which I think sounds lame but apparently it has several meanings that are nicely suited for Shepard's character (Especially Paragons): http://www.behindthename.com/name/howard
