Alright, I admit it. I'm a bit of a comic book fan.

However, I'm certainly not a fan of every comic out there, and the Punisher has always been a bit under my radar. I mean, I loved the Punisher MAX series, and I've seen him appear in other books now and then, but that's pretty much it. Still, I know who Frank Castle is, I know what he does, I know why he does it, yadda yadda yadda. I actually liked the character. The reason I never really got into him is that he lives in the Marvel universe. It's just a bit hard to swallow that a guy like Castle lives in the same place as the Fantastic Four, if you catch my drift.

"Ha-ha," I thought "Franken-Castle! I get it! Good one, Marvel!"

Then, I found out it wasn't a joke. Apparently, this is canon right now. It has been for some time. From what I understand, Daken (aka "Dark Wolverine", who is pretty much just another bad joke on Marvel's part as far as I care) tore Frank to pieces because Daken works for a very very bad man, and bad men don't like the Punisher. Obviously, good old Frank totally had this coming - again, this is essentially just a guy who shoots bad guys, in a universe full of people who are very much immune to bullets.

So far, so good. But then Morbius (the old Spider-man vampire villain who, for the record, is a lot less lame in the comics than he was in the 90s cartoon) found Frank's remains and made a Frankenstein-like creation out of them, in an attempt to get the Punisher to join his <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_monsters>Universal Monsters-themed band of vampires, werewolves, and other assorted monsters.

I don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand I do like the Punisher, and this looks like an abomination very much like what they did to him in the late 90s when he briefly became a supernatural beyond-the-grave avenger as well, which essentially destroyed the series until it was rebooted by Garth Ennis a few years later. Now, it looks like they've once again destroyed the essence of a good character and turned him into a lame gimmick. On the other hand, a supernatural Frankenstein-like monster does fit the capes-and-tights world of Marvel better than the gun-toting Vietnam-veteran vigilante murderer he used to be, while still preserving his anti-hero status, albeit in a very different form.

At first, I was going to write an <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.189295-Incoming-nerd-rage-Kick-Ass>Incoming Nerd Rage-style rant about this, but I'm too confused to get angry at this. I just... don't have the right words. Is this a good development? Is this a bad joke? Is this a good character getting ruined? I honestly don't know.

I'm guessing this only applies to the "monsters" universe, cos Spiderman is still Spiderman and Wolverine is still an angry Canadian with awesome abilities.

Still, the two universes will probably cross at some point, so we'll get Franken-Castle against regular Punisher and whatnot.

It looks stupid. But as long as they don't make scared of fire like the typical Frankenstein then it's okay by me. Still lame and boring and overused but okay.

No, no. You misunderstand. This isn't an alternative universe. This is the main 616 Marvel universe. A bunch of monster-themed characters simply teamed up. And they turned Frank Castle into Frankenstein's monster.

I wish I was kidding.

Technically I couldn't care less, but it's more because I really hate the Punisher.

He's not like Wolverine, who depending on the writer treads a line between 'Jerk with a Heart of Gold' 'Murdering Wanker' and ocassionally 'Really genuinely good guy'

Punisher treads a line between 'Self-Righteous Avenger' 'Murdering Sociopath' and 'Serial Killer.' I really don't like him.

So yeah, because I split from the main Marvel universe a long time ago (pre-Joe Quesade, though that would really have tipped me away) and returned to a combination of DC, Vertigo, Titan etc, I don't like what they do nowadays anyway.

Actually, I tell a lie, I liked the Ultimate Marvel series, I thought it was a brave new attempt to retell the stories, featured some pretty good writing (though not stellar), and generally was starting to get me back into comic books again properly.

Then I heard what they were doing with Ultimatum.

So basically Marvel comics can eat a dick pavlova in my opinion, I'm sticking with Batman, at least he has Harvey Quinn in his Rogue's Gallery.

.........So what you're saying is that IS The Punisher?

This isn't some multiverse bullshit?

That's the real deal, the main continuity?

Eh, it doesn't bother me. Have you seen the canon new look for the Joker?

Eh...I think given the pressure Marvel writers are under to keep their (at this point very old) characters fresh, it was inevitable that they would take the train to crazy town. At least this time it's a funny change.

I'm fine with it, probably because I don't read comics though.

I like the punisher, but to be honest I've never been too interested in the comics...
I only read one, that was my brothers. I much prefer the (first) film and the game [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Punisher_(2005_video_game)].
So once that abbomination stays in the comics I don't mind...

OH HO! This is flat-out B.S. I tolerated everything in the Ultimate Marvel stuff, but this is the last straw. Making Frank Castle into that...that peice of shit is too much.

Marvel took a big dose of the "Fuck Canon" pills around about the Inferno series on X-Men and now spend their entire time ret-conning the previous artists. As soon as the notion of 616 came out, the whole thing could just be replaced by Family Guy jokes made into episodes.

REALLY occasionally, they strike gold, but it's just so much noise these days that no-one gives a damn if Aunt May starts working for Mister Sinister.

Seriously? What they did to Spiderman was unthinkable and puts them lower than Bay's explodathons. Even if you have to rewrite worlds for the "NEW" generation, that doesn't mean wiping your ass with the old one. Grow a fucking spine Marvel and stop using demographics as a tool for you to shovel shit into a series.

Wasn't Arm Fall Off Boy a silver age character though? I think most of anything that happened during that time can be swept under the "weird shit" rug and ignored. Also, he was a completely new character, not a very established character being turned into something completely different. Not that that has never happened before, but... let's just focus on Frank right now, lest this turns into a "stupid things that happen in comics"-thread. :p

And yeah, Daken is Wolverine's (half-Japanese, bisexual) son who, as per the "Wolverine's offspring/clones have claws in stupid places"-rule (see X-23), has a claw extending from his wrists.

yeah I voted yes to the poll, because I love Marvel. But that was before actually reading the caption and seeing the picture. I just died inside.

Hey, it happens. Marvel has been dumping on their characters a whole hell of alot as of late. As a Punisher and Captain America fan, it's been especially brutal. It's gotten to the point that the only character that is still written competently is Deadpool.

Don't get me wrong: DC pulls the same shit all the time. It just so happens that they are doing pretty good at this moment in time. Though "Brightest Day" is starting to make me nervous.
