I found Dragon Age: Origins to be much more enjoyable than Mass Effect. Both games have good characters and stories, but the combat in Dragon Age: Origins is vastly superior. It's fun, challenging, and satisfying!

random side planets sucked. Really. really. really. hard.

Unfortunately both games share a major flaw. The side quests in both of them suck horribly. Here's the formula for most side quests in Dragon Age: Origins;

Step 1: Examine some random object
Step 2: Get lengthy codex entry that you won't bother to read
Step 3: Continue doing your normal business
Step 4: Kill some random enemy
Step 5: Suddenly complete the quest without even realizing that you had done it
oddly enough...Dragon Age sidequests are optional, as they won't effect my playthrough of Mass Effect 2.

Wait! I know!

I'll just hold off on ME2 until a few weeks after, and play both ME and DA at the same time at a leisurely pace. There better not be any ME2 spoilers all over the Escapist...
-----------------------------------
Now, what to play as in DA?

I want a class that compliments a team made of: Sten, Morrigan, and Leliana.

What should I be?

I liked the companions better in Dragon Age - mainly because they all, with the possible exception of Wynne and definitely the "secret companion", have a tendency to be rather hysterically funny.
Then again, I preferred the gameplay of Mass Effect, and the fact that Shepard isn't just a silent protagonist.
The story is pretty damn good for both.

If I had to pick one, I'd go for Dragon Age. It does have a little pink pig/rat thing called "Schmooples", after all. And a dog, whose name for me will always be "Gromit".
And Zevran's insistence on making passes at Wynne.
And Oghren.

Anything you like. You've got a warrior, a mage and a rogue already.

I like mages, but Dragon Age makes them boring as fuck. And rogue has the dagger damage glitch, and I can't patch it without Xbox Live. And warrior is just bland as fuck.

Good points.
Hmm.
If I had to pick one just going by that party, I'd go for warrior - or rogue if you're un-lazy enough to manoeuvre into backstab position - and give Leliana a bow. Keep Morrigan and Leliana on fire support while you and Sten carve up whatever's in your way. Bear in mind that a warrior is better prepared to get your more fragile companions out of a tight spot if something charges at them.
As much as I love her batshit craziness, Leliana does die an awful lot. She's good at picking locks though.

I found Dragon Age to be rather mediocre. The story was excellent as is usual with BioWare, but I don't think it really matched up quite as well in the combat or loot areas. Then again, I played it on the 360 so I suppose the PC experience is a whole lot better. Then again, the same could be said about PC Mass Effect...

Dragon Age is quite a long game as well. A bare bones playthrough with very few side quests took me between 30-35 hours on Normal. Mass Effect with no side quests is a lot closer to 8-12 hours, much easier to complete before Mass Effect 2 drops.

Well I think ME 2 is going to be one of the greatest games of this console generation so... You can run through a ME 1 playthrough in 20 hours on the middle or lower difficulty setting. Pick whatever class you think you can get through it fastest with, and get playing. The only thing that really matters are if you're a paragon/renegade, and the plot decisions. I say pick the fastest class instead of what you'd want to carry over because you can change it in ME 2.

Ether way your heading for a rip off of knights of the old republic, but if you want a less rip off of KOTOR then go for mass erect er i mean mass effect (shifty eyes).

Why stop at one...combine the two!

Play ME and DA at the same time!

If you switch games quick enough, you can pretend its a crossover game!

Commander Sheppard has been turned into a dwarf and must now battle the Reapers as a "Grey Specter". Meanwhile, a bisexual elf tries to get into the commander's pants and Captain Janeway has abandoned the Star Trek universe in order turn into a psychotic dragon witch who wants to eat your ship because....well, she just doesn't like you.

I swap between the two when I die, especially if I haven't saved for a while. I'm after 3 whole ME play throughs before ME2 comes out and I'm at 1 and a bit, Dragon Age, I'm still going through for the achievements, I overplayed it when it came out.

Chopping and changing between the two at deaths is my recommendation, as if you really get into one, you can continue for a bit longer.

Mass Effect -> Mass Effect 2 (It will be out before you're done with all side quests in ME) -> DO:A (given you have time and not got stuck in the ME universe)

A little bit of advise tho, play them on PC, the PC versions are better.
Barley any difference for DA:O but the PC version of ME got vast improvements before it was released.

I say Mass Effect, but that's only really because I never liked the "click on enemy, watch him die" combat system. It just seems so boring. Yes, I forced myself to play Diablo 2, I was bored as hell watching the game play itself.
