There was a research paper about MUDs a while back that identified four categories of gamers, described them, and talked about their interactions in multiplayer games. I don't remember where I saw the original article but I think the categories apply to both multiplayer and single player games.
The poll question is, which type of player are you?
Achiever: Interested in in-game power, use the best items, most effective techniques, min/max for effectiveness above all else.
Explorer: Interested opening up the whole map, collecting every widget, and uncovering every secret.
Socializer: Role playing focus. Interested more in the social aspect of multiplayer games than the gameplay itself. So the game becomes the relationship between you and the other players.
Killer: You engage in video game cruelty whenever possible, you always take the evil path in single player games, or go out of your way to harm other players in multiplayer games.
