If you generally like all types of music, how exactly does asking biased internet strangers which musical genre is "best" help "expand your musical mind"? But to answer that question, clearly the other category is the correct choice, as it encompasses a vast swathe of music you didn't include in your poll.

Regarding the question the thread title poses, I recommend classical, progressive, and metal.

I'd go with some Symphonic Metal. Nightwish and Within Temptation are some good bands for that. I'll also recommend some ICP if you wish to venture into the Rap genre.

whatever the hell you want to listen too dude.
I'll go with this. If you're expanding your tastes in music, why limit yourself to a single genre?

Listen to ska! It's got quality hooks, a lot of variety within the genre, and in all likleyhood your friends haven't even heard of it. It's similar to a quick rock/reggae mix.

A few people know Reel Big Fish if you want to use them as a starting point, but I would reccomend any of Streetlight Manifesto's albums also. I'd also reccomend different bands based on your taste. Maybe Suburban Legends if you like pop stuff. The Cat Empire if you like the indie scene. Op Ivy, Rancid, Mu330, Catch 22, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (!) any related artists if you like punk/harder stuff. The Skatalites are pure jamaican ska. Mephiskapheles if you like any jazz. And that's just a few ska/ska related bands.

Imagine the look on your friend's faces when you come back listening to a genre that's even beyond their musical knowledge.

Other, listen to what you want to listen to.

I grew up being told that the only music worth listening to was rock by pretty much everyone I knew. I then grew up one day and learned "Hey, there are hundreds of other styles of music out there that I'm missing out one because people want me to have the same musical taste as them."

Just look up "Good Music" on Youtube and you should come up with tons of new styles to try.

Believers Never Die as in Fall Out Boy? Not exactly my favorite artist but still...Hello Rockview and GNV FLA are both unstoppably good albums, so i harbor no ill will. :p

I hope OP is listening to this!

Whatever you want. If you want to find more bands, go to last.fm/Pandora, and start a radio station with your favorite band. You're bound to find stuff.

Outside of that, just take whatever genre of music you're into at the moment, and type it into wikipedia. There will probably be a list of a bunch of artists in the same genre of music.

I recommend that you listen to my beloved J-pop/J-rock

Either that or Pendulum, an amazing electronic band that I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet
