Then I realized that I wanted a charmander too, so I borrowed my friends red version and basically stole him charmander. If I remember correctly, he wasn't too far in so he didn't really care that much.

First time ever trying Pokemon, it was Charmander on the Blue version, because I figured fire would be awesome. It wasn't my copy of the game though, so I couldn't save it or anything.
When I later got the game for myself, and played for real, it was the Yellow version, so I had no choice but to start with Pikachu.

Well, it was a Pikachu. Seeing as how my first Pokemon game was Pokemon Yellow, the choice was quite clear.

after re-reading this thread i've decided to start a new game on pokemon silver. so i'll let you all know what my first one is... cause i can tell you're all dying to know 
Mine was Charmander in the original Red. Then many many days later, it was a level 100 Charizard.

As for cards, my first was a booster pack. Want to know what it contained?
1st Edition Shiny Charizard! My friend bought a booster at the same time, and also go a Charizard. They now have pride of place in both our collections, 13 years later..

Pikachu in Yellow! Although, he's gone now, Charmander in LeafGreen would the "first" one in the games that actually connect with each other and I can keep.
