So, I've noticed a trend in recent games: there's no cheats! No codes, no secrets, no god mode, no foundational game-breakers. Sure, every now and again you get the unlock cheats, which make more stuff available to you in the store, but those are really cheats. And here's me, finding myself bored with the mundane hack and slash of the recent lineup, and so I go looking for some button combinations that will get me through all the boring bits so that I can finish the story, and have some unbalanced fun ripping my enemies into confetti. And I go look, but there's nothing to be found! No unlimited magic/mana, no unlock all weapons for free, no unlimited currency, no god mode...sometimes, I want the game to challenge me. Other times, I want to mash buttons that turn my enemies into compost while I can leisurely sit sipping a martini, my health maxed out, and my infinite stream of magic ripping new orifices.

So, do you ever miss cheats or codes?

I miss them. After beating a game, cheats could be activated to enhance the play time and make the game more enjoyable. It almost seems like DLC has replaced cheat codes, as that is now how developers have chosen to extend a player's time playing their game.

It was achievements, making those achievements, adding cheats into a game with achievements kind of maybe made the whole making the whole cheat tracker/achievement disabler was irritating so they just took cheats out for achievements

Absolutely! I freakin' hate that... maybe I just want to go back to a level I enjoyed, kick on god mode and bust some damn heads to celebrate beating the game. Oh that's right... that would be cheating... but after you've beat the game, who cares? Take for example Saint's Row 2. There were codes you could put into the cell phone in-game to unlock special vehicles... doing so would lock your gamer score. So what? If you don't care, then let us cheat if we want.

Didn't notice they had left. There's almost always that 'lil Tilde-button and the console -ohwait, PC player here. Forget I said anything.

Okay, joking aside, I think cheats can sometimes be a fun way to spice up an otherwise boring or just too often played game. If they've decided to remove them, that would be a bit of a bummer. But I never use cheats on the first or second (if a game merits that) playtrough, so this is more of a game longevity issue than anything else to me.

I like the Goldeneye mentality for cheats - unlockable by being awesome at the game.

Wish more games did that!

I've learned to deal without them, in fact the lack of them have helped me improve my skill as a gamer.

I'll always remember the Ultimate Konami Code though.

GTA IV had something similar, except that you could spawn vehicles without disabling achievements. It was good to not always have to steal one.

I really miss neat stuff like cheat codes, or little hidden easter eggs, or even just secret stuff you could unlock through certain gameplay challenges. It added a lot more fun to the experience and increased the replay value of a lot of games. It could have been something as simple as a little blood cheat, or something as awesome as the gold armor in Mega Man X3:
Most games now don't have neat little things hidden in them, and instead of unlocking stuff through playing the game we have to pay for them. It takes a lot of the fun out of things.

I definitely preferred cheats to achievements, mostly, I used to have a huge binder full of cheats... that I never used.

Golden Eye had it down to a science. Do great on a level and unlock a code or modifier <3

We need more games where an active cheat just disables achievements. Then we all win. I wish the codes would make a comeback.

Ya I miss cheats, I remember sessions of GTA: San Andreas where you would turn on flying car mode and fly around ripping shit up! So much fun, I guess gaming is too serious nowadays...

As a rule I don't bother cheating, but in games like gran tourismo or guitar hero, I want want to play through all the shitty low tier levels, I want to drive my dream car, or play cowboys from hell (or whatever), in these instances I like to cheat and bought the game knowing I would.
