Gameplay. Can have a great story and setting, but if the gameplay is bad it fails as a GAME.

BioShock demonstrated this to me. I liked the setting, the story, and the gimmicks (ADAM et al) but I never felt that the controls and other mechanics worked well enough, so I lost interest about 3 hrs in.

i agree but if u had to say mess up the gameplay to show the character
something like silent hill where the combat is clunkey to show how week the characters are
would that be more important then having a smooth flowing set of gameplay mechanics

We seem to have had a lot of threads like this recently. Ones that ask "what do you prefer?" and list 5 or so elements that make up a game. It is really boring now.

OT: Gameplay. It is called a videogame for this reason.

If the gameplay is streamlined, as easy as possible, but also open to a little experimentation, I decree a game to be adequate. I play a game called Pocket Tanks in my small open intervals of spare time, and it is lacking in most of the options at the top of the list.

The multiplayer features are restricted to LAN play and hotseat games, the graphics are minimalist, and the story and theme are virtually nonexistent. But it's simply fun to play.

The most important thing to me in a game is the characters and the story. I consider gameplay very important as well but I consider the story and characters more important.

For me a game could be the most beautifully written, well acted and deeply meaningful piece of script made for any piece of entertainment, but if it controls like arse, then I'll pass.

I think that good, intuitive controls are integral for the immersion within a gamneworld. If I have a shit of a time just trying to walk through a door (I'm looking at you GTA4) then it takes out the immersion factor and, concequently, my immersion within the story. I just pushes me back to the reality that I'm sitting in front of my TV watching two computer programs lip-synch to an actor's voice to make it seem like they're saying something.

Gameplay, for the twentieth time. If it's fun enough to keep my attention, I don't so much care about the other elements. Not that it hurts to have those be impressive too.

All of the above? Seriously, just one thing doesnt make a good game.. it needs to have as many of these coponents to work well.

Gameplay comes first (after all, a game IS about gameplay)
Graphics comes with theme, depends on your goals for the game. IMHO graphics dont matter as much as gameplay because a pretty but broken game is boring.
Story is good to have. Not always needed (again depends on the game) but its better to have a good story well told than one that isnt.
ANd MP..i dont really care that much. What i really want is more splitscreen COOP for consoles, and more campaign COOP for PC games.

I would add that all games should have mod suppport where possible, map editor too. Makes it mcuh more interesting and increase the lifespan of a game when people can contribute something to it.

Smooth gameplay vs. story is a tough choice. I can honestly settle for mediocre on one for excellent on the other.
Very well said. This.

I think I may edge slightly in favour of gameplay - just because some games have excellent stories but have dated gameplay and I now find them very difficult to play.

interesting, addictive story and multi player/re playability.

All the rest are really just bonuses...

It is gameplay for me. Graphics and story aren't as important because I skip cutscenes, although they do make it a hell of a lot better if they are there.

For me its Story. If the game isn't interesting and doesn't pull me in, I just don't even play it more then once.
