Poll: Whats next for ID software? Doom Sequel or Quake Reboot?

They'll probably do a "Doom" sequel. "Quake" is still remembered and all that, but "Doom" is way more fondly remembered and the newest one is getting tonnes of love.

Personally I'd think it would be cool if they went with a new IP in the old-school mixed with 3D thing they've done with "Doom 2016" now that they know that people like it.

I admit that I prefer a Doom sequel, though I wouldn't mind having both. I've only played Quake II (rented on the PS1) & III. IV I was going to pick up when I got a 360, but forgot about it. Technically, Doom (2016) is an unofficial Quake game when you think about it. There's the Quad Damage power-up, and similar design aesthetics, though Doom is still more colorful than the original Quake.

Now that I think about it, should there be a reboot or just go head and call it Quake V? Then again it's been over a decade, so a reboot isn't necessarily out of order; but I wouldn't mind if id just went ahead did call it a Quake V.

I mean think about the stuff in Quake 1 and then imagine it being put into the Doom engine with its library of reaction animations. The lightning gun, the nail gun, grenade launcher, think what those would be like if they were slotted into something like the Doom engine with those left click alternates. Then I want you to imagine cutting a Shambler in half with a chainsaw.

What I'm seeing are really meaty guns that would feel fantastic to use and enemies that are really distinct from what you see normally in games nowadays. Granted there are a couple boring grunts, but counterpoint to that was the chainsaw wielding grenade launching ogre. Pretty much what the original Devs think of as eclectic and not very well designed, I see the option to cherry pick the best parts and fill in the holes to jump off and create something unique, something the world hasn't seen for 20 years now.

TOTALLY with you on this. Although I love ALL the Quake games, and think that the narrative in Quake IV was good enough to make a sequel out of, it's Quake 1 that had the most personality and character set apart from most other shooters, even today. So although I'd be perfectly happy with a sequel, I think a reboot would be freakin' awesome sauce.

The weapons, the enemies, the levels, the soundtrack, it was such a unique gem. Sticking to the more medieval aesthetic would set itself apart even more. Doom already has the sci-fi Mars base and cybernetic-infused demons, so no need to go that direction with Quake as much. So yeah, I'd prefer a reboot. Can do the same balance to MP and SP as Doom 4 I don't care. Personally, I'd prefer they alternate franchise releases as well, so it doesn't go stale like Assassins Creed or someshit. And not too messy like Black Ops/Warfare games.

Rage was bad because there was no impetus to the game. It had a bunch of neat weapons and a world with multiple little set pieces that could have been built upon but went ultimately nowhere. Arguably it was the FPS equivalent of Kingdoms of Amalur.

That's actually a really good metaphor for the game.

But, despite that, I loved "Rage". Yes the story was hot garbage, but I thought the weapons, enemies, graphics, and setting were awesome, so count me in as someone hoping ID does decide to try again with Rage and give us a better game.

Rage 2 was in development along with old doom 4 but both games were cancelled in favor of Doom reboot. if ID want to make Rage 2. they need to ditch following features

iron sight
Regen health
Character cant die if you solve stupid puzzle
Linearity and straight forward
slow movement (should be fast like Doom and quake)

A Quake reboot would be awesome, as in either remake, or more likely, reimagining of Quake 1. When I think of Quake, I think of Quake 1 and it's awesome setting, enemies and weapons. A remake might be hard to balance, but a sequel with the old weapons, especially the nailgun(s) and lightning gun would be awesome, although the latter would need special care in terms of effects.

I'd love to see a new IP with the same sense of glorious gorey fun and enthusiasm that the new Doom has. But I'd settle for a reboot of something else or a sequel too.

With all the retro-platformer stuff being so popular nowadays, I'm not sure how they haven't redone/rebooted Keen yet.

I'd take a Heretic/Hexen over the Catacomb though. Not sure who has the rights to that though, ID published it, so maybe Bethesda now.

I think ActiBlizz owns Raven and thus the IPs for Hexen/Heretic. So that shoots that idea down in flames. I threw Catacomb/Hovertank out there to be semi-facetious but in reality I actually wouldn't mind a Catacomb reboot. Was an interesting game.

I honestly don't think ID Software will really do anything for quite a while.
In the last decade they've been quite a slow moving company, so anyone holding their breath for something else from them in the next 1-2 years is probably going to be long dead before the next game comes out. I wouldn't be shocked if they spent the next few years pushing around id tech 6 and working on id tech 7.

Not necessarily a bad idea. Really, it's all about the execution. Several great sequels have had extremely forgettable predecessors:
Duke Nukem 3D
Spec Ops: The line
Street Fighter 2
Just Cause 2

They are relatively rare, because crap games don't usually get sequels, and when they do it's often the same incompetent developers that make it. But id seems to be on form, so they could make a good Rage 2.

I personally think Doom sequel because Quake is MP franchise and ID will screwed up Quake because they suck at making MP nowadays however they are excellent at making SP games. so Doom sequel all the way which set on earth.

Id isn't solely responsible for the multiplayer in DOOM. They developed it in conjunction with Certain Affinity, who clearly did most of the legwork since it plays like only slightly faster Halo.

OT: The only Quake I've played is Quake 4 and it seems like Quake 4 is the Doom 3 of its franchise. A more corridor driven horror esque game than the ones that came before. I wouldn't mind a new quake, but after how good DOOM came out I'd definitely like more of that first. I'm hoping for some single player DLC.

Both games are quite simillar. You're a badass marine killing monsters. Both have complex maps, fast character movement and almost the same type of weapons. Only the theme is slightly different.

Problem is, people rarely, if ever use firearms in the Dune universe, considering the effect lasguns have on shields. Since iD has pretty much based its entire roster on FPS games as of Wolfenstein (bar some exceptions), and have rarely, if ever taken an interest in storytelling outside Doom 3 (I'm sure you could point to exceptions there as well), I can't see them being a good fit for the Dune setting.
