I would say cats because they're low maintenance and independent, yet still social and fun.

But more specifically Ponies.

The animated kind.
Fuck. I was wondering how long it would take someone to get there... Cretin. I just can't join your herd of pony fanatics... you have earned the scorn of everyone else. Conratulations. There should be a badge for this...

I'd have to go with a cat. They're the perfect animal if you know how to take care of them. You know, such as IGNORING PETA and letting your cats roam OUTSIDE because letting them outdoors is NOT ANIMAL ABUSE!!!

But yeah, cats are independant enough that all you need to do is give them food, water, let them outdoors, and give them a little attention/catnip now and again. They really are kinda independant and will have a love-hate relationship with you, choosing to purr and let you love them one moment, and then slash at you the next. ^.^

If dogs weren't so high-maitenance I might have said a dog, but meh.

I'm more of a cat person I think, because of their ability for independence while still being affectionate pets. But dogs are the best pet for humans in general. Nothing will bond with you more or be better suited to the pet relationship. As falconsgyre pointed out they are naturally suited for it from all the time we've spent with them.

At least this was true when humans were more active and did shit all day with their dogs, giving them both a sense of purpose. Cats are probably more convenient now a days when people sit around instead of going outside, and can't/don't need to spend every hour of the day with their pet.

Things like fish, snakes, and bird I hardly consider a real pet. Those things do not care about you. A fish is basically the equivalent of a living decoration for your house.

Incidentally, my daughter has a bearded dragon, named Drake. It's pretty cool, looks like tihs...

Only thing is, it'll change colur depeding on mood, but if it really wants to be put down the only effective way it has of expressing this is to bite you...
Hell yeah. I used to have one of those. He was kick-ass enough to have a spot on my moms blog and a painting of him in my room right now.

So either a Bearded Dragon or a cat, since they're easy to handle.

Domesticated foxes are pretty cool, i'd like one of those. Though of course if they were real one would have to go with dragons.

Ant farm Ant farm Ant farm!
Did I mention that I like Ants yet?
I was actually thinking about getting an ant farm. How is it, are they hard to maintain? Is the food expensive? Danger of that thing tipping over?
Ant farms tend to differ on how much assembly and maintaining is required but usually not much is required, depending on the kind of ant, you can usually just feed them any thing you have lying around, peanut butter, sugar, other kinds of insects, that and of course a little bit of water, if you knock the farm over there is a big danger of something becoming undone or disconnecting allowing the Ants to escape and wreak havoc upon your home.
You don't really have do much other than set up the farm, occasionally give them food and watch them scurry around and dig and build and such for your entertainment and amusement. Although, if the Queen dies, you'll need to get a Male from a different colony to impregnate another Ant in your colony to get a new Queen or your Farm will die off.
How often do you have to expand the ant farm? Once a year, more or less?
*Scratches head* I don't really know, that's also kind of something that depends on what size a farm you started off with and how productive your Ants are... It'd probably be better to find a guide on this than to ask me...

I would have said cats just two months ago, but then I got the best dog ever so I'm gonna have to go with dogs.
Cats are a lot more hassle-free, though.

I have 13 cats and a hamster. So I guess I love cats a bit...XD But my favourite pet is my current hamster, Izuna-Wheatley. He was originally called Izuna but he's so legendarily thick I had to add Wheatley to it.

Here's an average time for him in his light blue exercise ball. He runs into the wall, squeaks in pain, backs up...Runs into it again. This will continue until I sigh and pick him up.

You dare ignore the majestic ferret? A pox upon your house!

Ferrets are intelligent, loyal, and fuzzy. They make the cutest noises and it's just adorable how they steal things like remotes and pillows and hide them.

Bow before they're adorable goodness!
THIS.
