It's strangely entertaining. And it's funny too. And cute.
So are a lot of other cartoons but they haven't blown up. This is the main reason that this whole thing confuses me.

I don't even know what Foster's Home is, and the only reasons I even know what the Powerpuff Girls are is because my younger girlfriend (19) was into that at the time. I don't know... all I see are doe-eyed, rainbow and glitter covered nightmares of girlishness. Kind of the same feeling I get when I pass any give toy section at a department store and am blinded by all the pink at the Barbie display. Actually.... no, this is somehow worse.

I guess it will be one of those love it or hate it crazes. I'm more confused than anything... and mostly about people that are grown up (especially males) and are into My Little Pony.

Edit
So it's a slightly wittier, more sugar frosted version of this?
Having never seen the original series (sorry, was into the enitre 'Ponies are for girls!' phase at that age *shrug*) I can't say for sure, but I have seen it being described as a 30 minute commercial for the toy line. Truthfully speaking, Hasbro originally intended FiM to be the same, but Lauren Faust was actually able to work her magic and turn it into a very humorous show. It's just the entire 'Pony' thing is a big hurdle for a lot of people to overcome sometimes.

Anyway, I do suggest giving Foster's a spin if you want, and checking into The Powerpuff Girls. PPG is just freakin' genius on all fronts. No, really. Watch it now. I'm cool with you shying away from the pony thing, but I will set fire to you with my mind if you gloss over PPG.

From what I've read one of the reasons that it did was because at first no one on /co/ gave it a chance and joked about it, and then they found out it was actually a good show.

There are several factors. Firstly there's the animation. Then the humor...

One episode had a race between Rainbow Dash and Applejack for instance. It ended up being loaded with Looney Tunes physics! Something not seen in cartoons for a long time. Earlier on before that, there was an episode where Pinkie Pie was trying to find Rainbow Dash, and it was exactly like Pepe LePew looking for that cat, right down to the hopping animation/popping up all over the place.

Episode 3 had a Benny Hill chase sequence (which was done again in a recent episode), and during a Pegasus competition, one of them did "15 barrel rolls!". Lauren Faust is no stranger to the internet, BTW, and uses it as a means of communication to the fanbase so she even knows what we want to see while still making it kid-friendly.

The whole thing's just so well put together and reminds me of a time when cartoons were actually good and not used as a medium for teaching secondary languages when kids have trouble learning their first language in the first place.

@Wuffykins
The last part of your post actually made me giggle ಠ_ಠ

I'm in no hurry to get sucked into any of this because you;re right, cute ponies are a hurdle. Less about masculinity, more about what entertains little girls and adult men are typically not the same thing. So far, most of what I've seen others say only makes me dislike it more. Kind of like how I thought Tali Zora was a good character, but her fans put me off to her enough that I frankly cannot stand her anymore. IIRC this is big on /b/ right now too, and that's a pretty powerful warning as I see it.

Actually, no. I think the Pony meme was getting people banned from /b/ if anything else. Yes, banned. From /b/. Take that as you will.

But yeah, back to the show, I figured as much. If anything just give the two other series mentioned a shot, you'll see how Lauren Faust is pretty good at cramming humor for all ages into the shows she does. It may just be a little more complicated in doing so as MLP eps are prolific on Youtube since Hasbro doesn't seem to have an issue with it being there. Foster's & PPG I'm thinking not so much.

Well, I watched the first episode (as long as I could) and it seems alright for a kids cartoon, judging by today's standards, that is. I wouldn't mind my kids watching the show (if I had any).

Did I like it? No, the humour is predictable and childish (what a surprise) and I despise this kind of animation. But then I obviously don't belong to the target audience.

Its a meme. Honestly, I think most people actually dont watch/like the show and just want to follow everyone else.
Internet people love their memes...
Wasn't even aware it was a meme. A friend told me there was a reboot of the series, sent me a list of youtube links. This was at like 2am. I didn't sleep until I finished the list. Hoping for more.

If that means I've somehow only watched it to be "cool" even though I had no idea that anyone else but my friend was interested in it...

29 years old, and... well, the gender thing is up for debate.

OT: For me, it's the humor. There is a vast amount of veiled and not-so-veiled sarcasm in the show. Many times it actually takes the piss out of itself with the over-the top characters and plot-lines.

The main character (Twilight) spends half her time with a bemused/baffled look on her face from her friends' derpiness, usually accompanied by a sarcastic quip.

Some parts are a little tedious. It is still a show for adolescent girls. Thankfully the parts that directly cater to what the makers think girls that age like are pretty downplayed. Except the requisite moral at the end of each episode. But I can forgive it.

In response to this thread, I have ponytized my avatar. HYAH!

Besides, it's not just an internet craze. It's making its way out into the real world as well.

I think it's related to how Pokemon was gay shit in high school and then suddenly back up to ALL THE SHIT in college. Ironically liking the things you pretentiously hated in high school is how you get all the cool.

Also, /b/ secretly has a heart of gold. Try to explain its love of kittens without realizing this. You cannot.

From what I've gathered (which consists entirely of the crossovers on Halolz), the show basically plays out like what would happen if you asked a bunch of 5-10 year old boys to write a show for 5-10 year old girls. So basically, something for everyone.

And of course, it goes with Guile's theme :)

I do believe I'm in the same boat as the rest of you pony-lovers. I went to see what all the fuss was about, and now I can't get enough of this show. I was hooked in ten seconds flat.
