Any show that doesn't depend on well known and obscure movie or cultural references from the past 40 years to substitute for original jokes and story development.

Wait!....I pretty much crossed them all off, didn't I?

From your poll, it would probably have to be Futurama, with Drawn Together, South Park, and King of the Hill being... somewhere behind Futurama. Family Guy can be funny at times as well.

But most of my favorite shows are on Adult Swim:

The Boondocks
Venture Brothers
Xavier: Renegade Angel
Moral Orel
The Oblongs
Mission Hill

I like the show, but the comic is better. Not enough Huey being smart and not enough Caesar...existing.
I haven't read the comic, but I've noticed that season 3 is lacking a lot of Huey's intelligence. Still funny though, but Huey was one of my favorite characters, and he hasn't really been doing much so far, aside from the odd comment on what's happening every now and then. The prison episode had a lot of Huey in it though, I loved it.

Monkey Dust forever. The best thing the BBC has done, well, ever. The smartest and most incisive cartoon I've ever seen. Actually, the smartest and most incisive show I've ever seen, it toes the line between being too offensive and awkward and being outrageously funny brilliantly.
Sounds interesting, I think I'll check it out.

Family Guy is crap now a days
King of the Hill is past it's sell by date
South Park hasn't been funny since the movie
Drawn together..... I've never seen
and the only adult swim I like is Robot Chicken Star Wars

My favorite shows would be Simpsons, Futurama, Boondocks, Robot Chicken, and Venture Bros.

I like Family Guy before the revival episodes which heavily rely on those cut away gags and should be called the Seth MacFarlane Show because of how Seth shoves his atheist liberal views down our throats. Also, writing has gone down the crapper too and becomes too offensive and totally unfunny.

I have to admit that I haven't read all there is of the comic, either. Just a collection of the first year or two (since that's all I could find at my local library). If you ask me, both the show and the comic are great, but the show feels like it has been dumbed down at many points to make it more "accessible" to the general public. That's really the only problem I have with it. Oh, and Caesar. In the strips that I read, Caesar was featured so often that he was actually a more central character to the comic than Riley. I really have no idea why we haven't seen him, yet.

Yeah, I've seen way too many episodes of Family Guy with annoying political and atheistic messages. It was really bad in the episode where Brian openly admits he's an atheist and the whole town starts to hate him. I mean, I know there's negative stigma toward atheists at times, but it also exists toward the religious folks too. And I've never seen it escalate to such a point where it did in the show. And the whole thing was composed of the same recycled arguments for an against atheism, it offered no original social commentary at all, it didn't even feel like an original opinion.

With shows like The Boondocks, I actually like the "deeper" parts of it, because they often aren't as preachy and are done with more finesse, and it feels like a true message and not just the same old political views. The "Return of the King" episode of The Boondocks, specifically, was done brilliantly.

Yeah, it always bothers me when that happens, and I'm really starting to notice it too. The first two seasons always made me laugh, because they were filled with Uncle Ruckus's racism, but now that and a lot of the racial jokes are sort of getting old, and I'm itching to see more of the more intelligent stuff, but the show isn't quite delivering. I mean, I'm not asking for all out political commentary, because that gets old really fast too, but just more intelligence in general, instead of kind of pushing it into the background. Like the way they parodied black romantic comedy shows in one episode, sure it's not fucking deep, but it's still intelligent, because they are pointing out the absurdities of shows that so many people like, and it's hilarious.

I think I might check out the comic.

Futurama
The comedy is, at least in my opinion, wittier than the stuff you'd see on Family Guy or Simpsons.

Since we're talking about adult cartoons there's one I've been trying (and failing) to remember the title of. The show was about guys in college and I think 3 of them went to one school and their super-nerd friend went to another though he'd frequently webcam-chat at them or something like that. I only recall seeing it a few times, on TBS or TNT, I think. I know it's not too much to go on but maybe a fellow Escapist can help me out.

Was it the show Undergrads from MTV?
YES!!! I should've known my fellow Escapists would help me out here. I must've seen it when Comedy Central had it, though, as I rarely if ever watched MTV since even then it was mostly "The Real World" & "Road Rules" at that point, not so much music videos.

...now I'll have to search this show out so I can watch it. Thanks, Snownine!

Np man, glad I could help. There was a brief (very) period of time when MTV had good shows when I was growing up. They had Undergrads, 3-south, and I used to really like Clone High. Reality tv has destroyed many good scripted programs.

Futurama better than Simpsons? Come ON. Sure, Simpsons isn't as fun as it used to be, but there's no way that Futurama has produced as many great characters and ditto episodes as The Simpsons.

If I have to pick the ones on the list, I'd say Futurama and The Simpsons are tied.

In general, I'd go with Cowboy Bebop, or possibly Baccano. Ah, yes. And The Boondocks too. I loved that show.
