Well I'm new to the Tuba. Marching band ended about 2 months ago and I played sousaphone for it. I was put down to play Baritone for our Concert Band 1 but I switched to tuba instead. I'm also playing Trumpet for our Jazz band so I'm all over the place! :p
Awesome, well here's some tips for a fellow tuba player
Learn to love funk
Most pieces you will be playing a IV-I cadence constantly or just the chord note
If you can get your hands on one, a fourth valve one will allow for lower notes and it makes your job easier
playing faster is much much harder than on the smaller instruments

Good luck mate, it's nice to finally meet another tuba player :p

This poll fails without a "triangle" option.

I played trombone. I loved it for jazz but hated it for classical orchestral music.

I'm going with chimes/bells. Screw calling them percussion, they're an instrument in their own right.
Precussion is a section or a category not an instrument though so they instruments.

Also piano is not an orchestral instrument to anyone who said that.

Nope, only extremely dirty looks (and loud complaints).

Flutes get it too, it goes Trumpets-Clarinets-Flutes in a row.

Poor wind
Yeah...my band had the low brass interposed between most of us. 'Cept the flutes.

Still waiting to hear from that guy who thought clarinets couldn't do vibrato...
Although it's really annoying, 'cause a Clarinetist I know can ONLY play Vibrato, which often sounds terrible.

And yes the piano can be Orchestral, but it's not a traditional Orchestral Instrument

Probably, but with only 8 poll options...

I could change it to tuned percussion I suppose?

As in, an "I meant to do that" case? Sounds like someone disguising poor embouchure or breath control.

And yes the piano can be Orchestral, but it's not a traditional Orchestral Instrument
Right. <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchestra#Modern_Orchestra>It's a modern one. And they've been frequently paired with string instruments basically ever since they replaced harpsichords as the primary keyboard instrument (in other words, almost since their invention).

Just because they're just as good solo doesn't make them not orchestral.

More that they're a Jazz player, but they play in several Orchestras, and their notes ALWAYS WOBBLE. Which is frustrating, because it sounds sooo smug like you wouldn't believe. Also doesn't sound good,

It would be on the poll but for A space, and B yes, it's used, but is very often NOT in there at all.

It's my favourite instrument, but I don't consider it Orchestral

Me and a friend play in several orchestras, and we are constantly slagging off each other's instruments, he being a flautist, and I a trumpeter. As I was reflecting over these I figured I'd ask the Escapist's opinion.

So, what's your favourite Orchestral Instrument, and why?

On an unrelated note, is or is not the Viola a terrible instrument?
I love the sound of the Double Bass in an Orchestra. I'm probably biased, because I'm a Double Bassist myself.

However, all instruments are needed for a piece to sound good, so I like all of them.

I used to play the flute as well, and we were always getting screwed over by our conductor who thought that the way to good music was to give every lead part to the trumpet section... No offense :)

But to be honest I have to go for the oboe. If it wasn't so difficult to play I would pick it up in an instant

I play the Bass Clarinet myself.... Though, I do love the bassoon too. I'll pick Clarinet for my loyal subjects of Clarinetland.

Drums, any type of drums, I love the powerful beat, it really adds a lot to a piece.

Viola!
Dangit, we're important, too!
Include violas in the poll, or the cat gets it...
And by "it" I mean it gets its tummy rubbed.
Awwww. It's a kitty.

I voted clarinet, though to be honest, my heart really belongs to the cor anglais.

Yes I am very much a reed guy.
