I had a friend whom i have not seen in years ask me how i am and what i work as. I told him where i was and what i was doing with myself. Told him i'm in a job which in 5 years time i will be out of and off working at what i really want to do (when ever i decide what that is...).

He said "I remember you saying when we were like 14 you wanted to be a game programmer"
This got me thinking... how many people who actually enjoy games decide to do them as a job? I think i prefer not to because i want to enjoy them as a hobby...but then the other part of me says it would be good to enjoy what you do... (either way i can choose later i have time on my side >=D)

So....How Many of you actually work with games or your hobby? How many of you like your job? And what do you work as?

For me: After finishing school i worked as a candle maker for 5 months, then a glasses maker/receptionist and now im a full time office all rounder at a lawyers. (i've been out of school for 12 months now)

I'm currently looking for a job. I probably won't be that thrilled with it when I get one, but money is money

I could very well have worked in the game industry, my major was in animation, but they go hand in hand. In the end... after I graduated, I decided I didn't want to work in either game nor animation.

Long hours, low pay, hard work, just ruins the experience. I found myself seeing all the flaws and corner cutting in games and movies, I would never have seen those other wise.

So now I'm a graphic designer, the work is easier and the pay is better. I can play more games instead of just making them.

Hey now, let's not forget that the art asset guys are also the most expendable dime-a-dozen group on the market.

Me? I push carts at a Target. It's not glamorous, but it's work. Not too bad, and the people I work with are a good crowd. Can't say the same for the customers. Definitely not fond of days I have to cashier.

I'm a 3d environment artist, one of those expendable dime-a-dozen types, as you put it. Granted, I've only been fortunate enough to work at reputable studios that value their developers, but that's a little ridiculous. If layoffs happen, they happen. Being an artist, designer or programmer isn't going to save you if your studio goes under or is forced to downsize.

I've worked in different jobs from military intelligence to graphic design, and I have to admit I love my career. It's what I would be doing anyway if I wasn't getting paid to do it.
