Bungie didn't want to characterize MC in the games because while he did speak in cutscenes, they wanted to allow players to put themselves into his feet hence the no speaking in gameplay and lack of characterization.Windcaler said:One of the things Ive always really disliked about Halo is how reliant the story is on the books. I havnt read them myself but Ive been told the books really characterize Master chief well but hes hardly characterized at all in the games. Thats created a character that I really dislike in the games and paradoxically it makes it so I dont care enough about Halo to pick up the books. To me master chief is a violent adreneline junky with no discipline who has no place standing next to "real" soldiers. As an ex-soldier thats something that I really really really hate so the very character presence harms my experience in the game
James Cameron made the Alien movies? I thought that was Ridley Scott. (A quick IMDB check confirmed this).Gatx said:It's been a while since I've played either but the motion tracker thing in Halo works like the similarly named device in Aliens, but then again I think aesthetically that's how actual radar looks (blinking dots on a circle) anyway. I might also add that I guess the Elites with their armor on sorta kinda look like Xenomorphs. Also space marines but then again it's not like James Cameron invented space marines.StBishop said:What did it steal from James Cameron? You said that as if we all know exactly what you're talking about, but I've never heard that before.sketch_zeppelin said:I had alot of fun with it. it got me into FPS's mainly because while it stole alot from James Cameron, it did it very well. Also the old LAN parties with my friends were some of the best times i had with multiplayer. Its hard to beat sneaking up on one of your friends with the energy sword and saying "pssst, behind you" and having 7 screens pull a 180 and one of them goes black.
Care to clarify?
If I didn't know that Halo didn't come out 8 years before, I'd also say that some of the vehicles kind of look like the ones in Avatar, and the color palette is kind of similar (one side is murky green vs while the other is colorful with bright blues and purples).
Well no, see, James Cameron directed Aliens, the sequel, which is where you get the marines, rather than the first where it's more straight horror vibe. I think the motion tracker might've had more screen time too. Anyway directing Aliens is one of the things he's most famous for (along with Terminator 2 and Titanic) so I just gave my best guess that that was what the guy who made the statement was referring to. Other than that I can think of nothing else from anything James Cameron's worked that could have possibly influenced anything in Halo.StBishop said:James Cameron made the Alien movies? And the fact that Avatar is similar to Halo is sort of the opposite of Halo being derivative. It actually suggests that Avatar is derivative.
Radar is usually displayed in a similar way to the way it is in Halo, especially in film, I dare say that Alien (which is irrelevant because Cameron didn't make them) borrowed it from earlier films.
So basically there's no answer (yet) to my question of "How did Halo rip off Cameron?", correct?
Huh, you'd think they'd want to keep the same bloke making it to maintain the feel.Gatx said:Well no, see, James Cameron directed Aliens, the sequel, which is where you get the marines, rather than the first where it's more straight horror vibe. EDIT: And yeah I did mention that Halo came out before Avatar, I was just pointing out possible reasons for the guy's statement.
The marines in Halo are very akin to the Marines in Aliens, they even spout some lines from the movie just slightly altered. Johnson is one large reference to Al Apone from the movie to his looks and personality, various veichles in Halo are very similar to Aliens and lastly some scenes through out the main trilogy are very similar to Aliens. Bungie even admitted to being heavily inspired by Aliens.StBishop said:Huh, you'd think they'd want to keep the same bloke making it to maintain the feel.Gatx said:Well no, see, James Cameron directed Aliens, the sequel, which is where you get the marines, rather than the first where it's more straight horror vibe. (To be honest, I didn't know Cameron directed Terminator either.)
Regardless, the Spartans are almost wholesale ripped from WH40K's Spehs Mahrins. I'm not trying to say it's an original concept, I just didn't see the connection to James Cameron.

Wow, I never thought of it this way. So true.Tanis said:It's the FF7 of FPS.
Yes, it's the game that popped a LOT of cherries for console gamers who had never played a FPS online, but that's about it.
Mediocre main series, with a crappy RTS, and mediocre anime movie thing.
