I am think of creating a blog later on with this subject in it and would like the opinion of the escapist on how they see a problem and what their state of mind is.

For me personally, any problem/puzzle I face I have the "Me" set of mind, instead of the "him" set of mind.

Always 'How will I solve the problem'

Ive seen how much of an idiot my character is in the cutscenes and Im not leaving the problem solving up to them!

does anyone really think 'hmmm what would my character do?' when playing a game? I mean without me, Dr.Freeman wouldn't have gotten out of City 17, so it's obvious that I can't trust him to do things his way

P.S. both of our avatars are Optimus Prime!

I usually do both ways to be honest. Because I sometimes tend to think it's me in the game. It also depends on the game though.

It depends on the game. If I'm playing Fallout 3 and am playing as a kleptomaniacal, evil character, than I'd pick what HE would do, not me.

But if it's pretty much any other sort of situation, then it's my judgement.

Also, sweet, 1000 posts! :D

I immerse myself in the game as much as possible until a complex puzzle appears. Then I think "Where's a damn walkthrough when I need one?!"

I am very bad at puzzle games. You have no idea how bad.

When playing RPGs I always choose what my character would do rather than what I would do.

As for puzzles...it depends on the puzzle. I've played a number of Adventure games (and survival horror) where the puzzles are...how do I put this...not exactly in-character puzzles. Technically they are happening in the game, but there is no realistic way that you have to do the "move two quarts of liquid from here to there in order to open the door" really would happen in that game. That puzzle is meant for me the player, as opposed to me the character--there is also no personal choice involved so there is nothing to consult in terms of the character...it doesn't matter if my character is a lovable rogue or paragon of virtue when confronted with most of those puzzles. So I just work on solving the puzzle and don't worry about it too much.

Exactly, I am the same way. I usually think in first person, but it really depends on what game your playing.

In RPGs and decision making and morale issues, I do wonder what my character would do but for puzzles, no way.

Of course, it does depend on the puzzle. If it's open ended so that I can pick whatever and still go on, great, I'll do what my character would. But if my character has an Int of 3 and is faced with a riddle that will get him to extra goodies or content, I'll assume control and solve it my way. Otherwise, he'd stay at that door and stare at it until the game is over.

The only puzzle I remember that could be done in both player fashion and character fashion was in Zork: The Grand Inquisitor where you could either play chess on 3 boards (player) or smash the boards (character). It had plenty of those moments where you could either struggle with the puzzle or take the easy way out.

Prime Avatar too here.
That's President Optimus Prime to you.

I think it depends on how immersive the game is. Sometimes you really feel like you're there: which is why I might think I.
