A thought has been rumbling around in my head for a while, so I figured I'd ask you guys.

Title says it all; when is someone new, not? I joined this site approximately a month ago, and I've been worried about voicing any overtly annoying opinions/making too many threads/partaking in some of the wording here because I was worried that someone would look and say, "Wow, what is that new guy doing here?" This is a thought that plagues me everywhere I go. I want to say something, but think I might be a bit pretentious to try to fit myself in too quickly. In retrospect, I probably should have joined during this March Mayhem thing, with the other influx of newbies.

So, when is someone old enough to stand on their own and be considered a part of the crowd?

Note: I included post counts and time spent just in case you want to measure it differently.

The longer a community goes on, the higher the post count rises I think. I consider the breakoff point to be roughly a thousand posts nowadays. It was less when the forums were newer.

Truthfully though I tend to look at it on a fairly individual basis though because someone who writes fewer posts over a decent period of time, that have a quality I've noticed, definatly can't be considered a "newbie".

Really to me it depends on how comfortable the person is with getting into the Group, the swing of things, and standing out.
Some one can be "new" for 1 day while other people can be "New" for weeks.

Damn. Hardly the solid majority answer I was hoping for. Oh well, by most people's reckoning I should be newb-no-more by the end of the week. Awesome.

I've been here almost a year and still feel new. I'd say a thing that helps is getting an avatar and keeping it.

In the past I've advocated not letting people post until they're Gonzo.

But. I may have to ammend that. Been member for a year, AND Gonzo before you can post.

But don't you have to post a thousand times to go Gonzo?

So how would that wo-

Being 'new' myself I don't have much right to comment, but personally I haven't seen much 'new member' elitism on here compared to forums i've seen in the past. It's the quality of your posts that counts, not how long you've been here or how many single-sentence zero-content posts you can make per hour.

A couple of hundred posts in my opinion, and at least a months time aboard the site. Gives them enough time to know the community and enough interaction to prove they're not new.

Damn, because a lot of my posts are small/single-sentence. I just hate unnecessarily bulking up posts; if it can be said in a sentence, I usually try to.

Well I wasn't trying to criticise anyone in particular, or make anyone feel they had to write ridiculous essays every post they make. Rather i'm referring to the way people often say stuff like "I agree with this" and just leave it at that, without adding ANY personal input at all. And let's face it, i'm pretty sure every one of us has done it a few times.

One month I'd say. With at least 100 posts under their belt. Helps to get to know the place better. I'd say 2 months would be 'settled in' for me.

Incidentally, I still feel new, especially when talking to someone who joined before me.
20,000+ posts and still feel new? Oh no, I've got a long, long way to go! (maybe you are just 'new' at heart)

EDIT: I still feel new, though I've been a member for a while now, I only started posting at the beginning of February this year.

In reality, I'd say about like, a week. The title of newbie can last forever though. Ask Dr. Cox.

On the Escapist specifically? Dunno. Depends how active you are in that time. I'd say about 2 weeks, or maybe 200 posts.

That may be.
But, however, since you can get post count from user groups, my idea loses steam.

It took me a few days to get used to things around here, and I've been here for roughly a week, give or take a few days. That said, I don't really know anyone around here yet, so maybe it'll take longer for that part to come.

Doesn't matter how many posts you have or how long you've been here, it's human nature to be a newbies of life.

You won't stop being 'a new guy' unless you make some memorable posts. I don't mean you should try to create controversy wherever you go, just don't hold back because you're afraid that someone won't like your opinion. There's always someone who won't like your opinion. Anywhere, no matter what the opinion is.

About the threads, though... just don't make too many, and make them good when you do. Never start at 'I want to make a thread; what can I put in it?'. Instead make one if you have an idea and decide that it might prompt a good topic on here.
